It’s a night for overtime on the boys side as three games see bonus basketball.  Marshfield needs every one of Utah Findley’s 28 points and Jared Greenlee’s 24 to down Catholic 63-61 in OT.  State ranked Spokane recovers from a furious Clever rally to win in extra period 66-60 behind Dylan Price’s 29 points.  Fair Play continues their strong season with an extra period 69-61 win over Morrisville.  And Pierce City and Lockwood enjoyed playing each other so much they decided to go two extra periods before the Eagles win 62-60.

One game that didn’t go into overtime may serve as the coming out party for one of the underrated boys players I mentioned earlier today.  Richland’s Pat Poston scored 40 tonight as the Bears downed Macks Creek 105-78.

At the Barbershop - 2/5/10

Feeling sick for two weeks can leave you a lot of time to think.  And since my mind is going 100 miles an hour on a normal day, the last thing I need is time to think.  Lewis Black once hypothesized that hearing the dumbest thing he’d ever heard could be the possible cause of an aneurysm.  Now I’m not saying that one of my thoughts may be the dumbest thing you’ve ever heard.  But with a wife and two children that I’d still like to spend a few more years with, I’m not taking any chances.  We’re taking a trip to the barbershop so I can purge myself of potentially lethal thoughts.  If one of them causes you to have an aneurysm, I apologize.  But I don’t think you can prove anything.

Great moment tonight in Morrisville as Hannah Wilkerson becomes the states all time leading scorer. Former record holder Melissa Grider was on hand in the town she spent her first three years playing for to present Wilkerson the game ball after the record breaking point early in the second quarter.  Wilkerson would finish with 32 points as Miller won 75-54.  Congratulations Hannah!

In other games Skyline downs newly state ranked Fair Grove 50-48.  It’s going to be a real dogfight for the Mid-Lakes title.  West Plains continues their strong season with a 48-42 win over Rolla.  And Nixa gets a nice 51-34 win at Branson.  While on the boys side, Dadeville remains undefeated with an impressive 73-55 win over a very good Fair Play squad.

2009 MFBCA Football Academic All-State Team

Last year I was highly critical that the Ozarks wasn’t very well represented on the football academic all-state team.  A grand total of 16 teams and 47 players from the Ozarks made it last year.  Well let’s give a big round of applause to all the coaches who took the time to nominate their players this year because this year, the Ozarks are proudly represented by 27 teams and 88 players.  Leading the way is Webb City with 8, Lebanon with 7, Fair Grove with 6, Springfield Catholic and Thayer each have 5, and Nixa, Neosho, Salem, Seneca, and state champion Cassville each place 4 players.

Twelve players make their second appearance on the team.  They are Zach Cooley of Lebanon, Damian Fadl of Waynesville, Alex Wise of Neosho, Tanner Green and Ron Johnson of Nevada, Beau Bounous of Monett, Ben Selby of Reeds Spring, Ty Floyd and Kevin Presley of Salem, Max Jersak of Catholic, and Alec Hackett and Caleb Schaffitzel of Fair Grove.  Continue reading 2009 MFBCA Football Academic All-State Team

2/3/10 State Basketball Rankings

The latest state basketball rankings are out and they have just a slight bit of movement.  Scores from this week are sure to shake it up a bit more next week.  On the girls side, Walnut Grove moves up one spot in class 1 to #3.  And Verona drops one place to #9.  Sparta remains #1 in class 2.  But only three teams follow them as Miller falls out of the poll.  Osceola is at #6 up two from last week, Purdy is at #7 also up two, and Laquey falls three spots to #8.  Conway and Mt. Vernon are joined by Fair Grove in the class 3 top 10.  Conway moves from #7 to #5.  Mt. Vernon drops from #5 to #8.  While Fair Grove reappears in the poll at #10.  Webb City stands alone in class 4 at #1.  And Nixa and Kickapoo hold steady in class 5 with Nixa at #2, Kickapoo at #7.

The class 4 boys poll has the first area team of the year with Republic moving in at #8.  Strafford is the lone area team in class 3 as they move up a spot to #3.  Branson & Nixa hold their places in the class 5 poll with Branson at #4 and Nixa at #6.  Dadeville continues to roll along in class 1 at #3.  And Stoutland and Spokane remain in the class 2 poll.  The Owls hold steady at #4 while Stoutland falls from #3 to #7.

A huge contest in Verona tonight as the Lady Wildcats were looking to rebound from a loss to Clever against state-ranked Purdy who knocked off Miller last week.  And rebound Verona did as they win the Ozark 7 matchup 61-56 behind the 23 points of Tristan Carrasquillo.  Jessica Smith added 21 for Verona, while Shelby White led Purdy with 20.

On the boys side, Parkview gives a big shot in the arm to their Ozark Conference title hopes knocking off Joplin 51-48.  And Houston rides Kyle Poynter’s 36 points to a 84-83 double overtime win over Mountain Grove.  Poynter hit a 3 as the 4th quarter buzzer went off to send the game to overtime tied at 66.  Then hit the game winner in double overtime for the Tigers.

2010-2011 Football Classifications and Districts

MSHSAA announced official enrollment numbers for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school years last week.  Along with that were the new classifications and districts for football.  There are the requisite number of teams moving down & up, interesting districts, questionable moves, and even a new team from the area.  Here’s the districts by class, as well as some interesting things in each class.

Teams moving down

  • Nevada – class 4 to class 3
  • Pierce City – class 2 to class 1
  • Skyline – class 2 to class 1
