Some good action from Saturday, including the New Covenant soccer team’s ‘revenge’ tour hitting a snag in Cassville as they fell to the Wildcats 3-2.  I talked with a couple of Cassville’s soccer players Friday night at the Mt. Vernon/Cassville football game.  And while neither seemed upset about the ‘revenge’ comment published in the News-Leader, both of them did mention it.  Great game as Cassville overcame a second half deficit to get the win on a goal in the closing moments.  In softball, Nixa beat Glendale 8-0 to won their third straight Nixa Invitational behind a perfect game from Hallie Petersen.  The Lady Eagles also beat Parkview 8-0 and Walnut Grove 4-0.

    Other Friday action

    By Joboo | September 6, 2008

I know some people may be shocked to hear this.  But (brace yourself) there are sports other than football played on Fridays in the fall.  For instance, softball, where Ash Grove beat Miller 7 to 5 last night.  Shelly Wilson had 3 hits to lead the Pirates.  Boy’s swimming and diving also.  Why yesterday Kickapoo won an 8 team meet with Central finishing second.  Yes, tons of things are going on.  And here are the scores.

    Week 2 predictions

    By Joboo | September 5, 2008

22-11.  Not bad at all.  Especially when you consider what a wild week it was.  Consider, that the #4 team in the state in class 1 lost to a team that was 0-10 last year.  That 3 area teams scored 33 points or more and lost.  That a class 1 team beat a class 5.  That scoring was up by almost a touchdown a game versus the first week of last year.  That a Will Christian coached team passed for almost 500 yards and 8 touchdowns.  I mean really.  Anything is possible.  Government may actually start doing what’s right.  The Cubs may win the World Series.  Tom Cruise may go straight.  Will Ferrell may actually become funny…   Nah.  Onto the picks.

Action from a soggy Thursday night around the Ozarks.  Rogersville wins a matchup of state ranked volleyball teams downing Mountain Grove in straight sets.  Bailey Halford had 27 assists to lead the Wildcats.  And the Cassville boys soccer team goes for double digits to spoil Branson’s first ever soccer game by winning 10-2.  Uziel Franco had 6 to lead the Wildcats.

    Last one in is a….

    By Joboo | September 4, 2008

With the rain washing out everything yesterday, I thought I’d announce that we now have a winner in the ‘Last State to Visit OzarksSports.Net’ Sweepstakes. The lucky state will receive their very own OzarksSports.Net t-shirt and hat. If anyone from that state ever claims it.

    Now, the envelope please.

    THE CONTENDERS

    South Dakota

This one is near and dear to my heart as South Dakota is my dad’s home state. I’ve heard many tales from his youth. Of working in the gold mines, the Black Hills, hunting the plains, and the fabulous Mitchell Corn Palace.

Athletically, South Dakota boasts of 1964 10,000 meter gold medalist Billy Mills, Notre Dame coaching great Frank Leahy, and baseball coaching legend “Sparky” Anderson. The University of South Dakota Coyotes have sent a number of players onto the NFL, have a cross-country team that owns a Division 2 national title, and claims former world champion decathlete Dan O’Brian as an alumnus.  To the land of my ancestors, welcome to OzarksSports.Net.

    Vermont

Not just a haven for people seeking to legalize marijuana, Vermont has had it’s share of athletic success also. The Vermont Catamounts basketball team had a memorable run in the NCAA tournament in 03, 04, and 05. And the men’s ice hockey team has been a consistent winner producing NHL stars such as John LeClair and Martin St. Louis. Welcome aboard Vermont!

    THE LATE BLOOMER

    Hawaii

Yeah, yeah wiseguys. We all know what you think of when you think Hawaii. Volcanoes.  But did you know that the Aloha State has one of the most diverse sports scenes in the country? The Hawaii High School Athletic Association sponsors not only traditional sports such as basketball, football, and baseball, but also judo, air rifling, and canoe paddling. Hawaii is home to Sports Illustrated’s top high school athletic program in the country for 2008. The prestigious Punahou School in Honolulu. The University of Hawaii Warriors football team played in a BCS bowl last January. And to top it off, someone there did an actual search for Ozarks sports. Aloha Hawaii!!

    THE WINNER

    Delaware

Um….    Yeah.  You get your write up when you join in the revolution.  You’re behind the rest of the U.S.  But if you hurry, you can still beat Malaysia.  Oops!  Sorry, too late.   Maybe Sri Lanka.

    Week 1 football rankings

    By Joboo | September 3, 2008

After a great first week, the Associated Press state football rankings show a little change but still pretty stable.

No area representatives in classes 5 & 6 after Waynesville fell out of a tie for number 5 in class 5. In fact no one is even receiving any votes. Carthage is still number 2 in class 4 and received one first place vote. Webb City replaces the team they beat, Harrisonville, at number 3 and has one first place vote of their own. In class 3, Monett solidified their hold on number 1 by grabbing 10 of 12 first place votes. Seven more than in the pre-season poll. The Mountain Grove Panthers move up a spot to number 4 while Cassville is still receiving votes. The Ozarks gets it’s first class 2 representative of the year as Fair Grove, off a great showing against Buffalo, moves into the poll at number 10. And in class 1, Thayer is still number 2. Miller replaces Cabool at number 4 but the Bulldogs are still garnering some votes.

Here’s a link to the whole poll as seen on KY3.

    Preseason volleyball rankings

    By Joboo | September 3, 2008

The News-Leader published the preseason volleyball rankings yesterday before the start of the season. You can see the entire poll here.  Only one class 4 entry from the Ozarks.  Ozark at number 9.  A different story in the other classes though.  Class 3 features 4 local squads.  Number 2 Reeds Spring, number 7 Rogersville, number 8 Mountain Grove and Mt. Vernon at number 9.  Stockton comes in at number 2 on the class 2 poll with Pierce City at 5 and Strafford at 9.  And class 1 has Winona at number 2, Lockwood at 4, Osceola at 5, and New Covenant in at number 8.

    9/2 scores

    By Joboo | September 3, 2008

Volleyball opened up and took center stage last night.  State ranked Rogersville opened their season with a straight set 25-22, 29-27 win over Kickapoo.  Callie Carroll and Sarah Powell combined for 23 digs for the Wildcats as they showed a strong defensive effort.  Soccer also had a soggy opening night.  A trio of one goal margins were the highlight as Webb City took College Heights 1-0, Glendale beat Parkview by the same score, and Ozark downed Marshfield 2-1 in overtime.

    Week 1 review

    By Joboo | September 3, 2008

Now that the dust has settled on the holiday weekend and my moving into a new position at work, let’s take a look back at the carnage that was week 1 of the high school football season.

While my value as a prognosticator is yet to be determined, there is no doubting that I am a prophet. For yea verily in the book of OzarksSports, chapter of Football Preview, did the great prophet Joboo sayeth of his picks “Comprehensive, informative, entertaining, and ultimately pointless because the teams will make fools of us anyhow.” And some teams couldn’t wait beyond week one to make me look foolish. So to describe the first week, let’s play a little game I like to call…

    THE GOOD

    THE BAD

    THE UGLY

Record for the week: 22-11. Not bad for the opening week.
