To wrap up our preview for this year, here’s my picks for district champions, top players, rivalry games, and other games to watch. DISTRICT CHAMPS & RUNNERS-UP Class 1 District 3 – Cabool, Marionville, Miller, Thayer Champ – Miller The + is for Osceola who competes in the WEMO. Team Osceola Thayer El Dorado Springs McAuley Central McDonald County The Indians are poised for a good year with their 4-2 record being good for 3rd behind Adrian and Cass-Midway. A district including Rich Hill, Liberal, and Greenfield provides a good opportunity [...] In the Spring River Valley (that sounds like a commercial for bottled water) a potential state challenger leads the way. Team Miller Pierce City Lockwood Liberal Sarcoxie Greenfield Jasper Diamond Miller return everyone and the kitchen sink. Not only are they returning all but one starter from last years 7-3 squad including QB Justin Jack, they also get back RB Spencer Goodman who [...] Two titans look like they’ll battle it out for SCA supremacy this year. Team Mountain Grove Cabool Salem MV-BT Liberty Ava Willow Springs Houston Mountain Grove should be the class of the SCA this year with senior QB Casey White and a host of other starters returning. I see only the Bolivar game and the trip to Rogersville standing in their way. [...] A three-way title chase is shaping up this year in the Mid-Lakes Conference. And a traditional power may be about to take some lumps. Team Stockton Fair Grove Strafford AshGrove Marionville Pleasant Hope Skyline Any of the top three teams can win the conference this year. Working through the schedule, I have Stockton losing at Strafford, Strafford losing at Fair Grove, [...] The COC Small Division adds Catholic to the mix and returns a trio of very experienced teams. Team Rogersville Bolivar Marshfield Buffalo Catholic Reeds Spring Rogersville is my pick on a hunch and the schedule. The Wildcats, Liberators, and Blue Jays all return lots of starters and varsity experience. But Rogersville strikes me as the breakout team of the year. [...] |
