3/28/09 class 4 & 5 district finals

Great girls finals tonight in Cassville and Ozark.  Republic comes from behind to defeat Aurora 59-57 despite 30 points from Jamie Nash.  Aurora had 2 free throws to tie with 1.1 seconds left but couldn’t convert.  Republic moves on to play Webb City next who drummed Nevada 60-35 to win that district.   And in what may turn out to be the de facto state title game, Nixa defeats Kickapoo 57-56 in Ozark behind Bethanie Funderburk’s 17 points and free throw with 1.6 seconds left.

On the boys side,  Branson held off a determined Nixa squad to avenge their defeat last week 59-55.  Mike Wiebe scored 19 points, grabbed 10 boards, and had 5 blocks for the Pirates.   Aurora wins the boys side of things in Cassville 50-38 over Republic.  Aurora used 11-2 run after the Tigers had closed to 39-36 early in the fourth to put the game away.  Chase Howerton had 23 points for the Houn Dawgs.  They’ll next play against Webb City who completed the Cardinal sweep in Nevada with a 73-53 win over Harrisonville.

I’ll have a full report on early class 1, 2, & 3 district action tomorrow.

3/27/09 scores and district update

First off, I apologize for not warning everyone in advance that the scores would be delayed.  I had an evening out with my wife last night.  Yes, I bypassed basketball for my wife.  A real man keeps his priorities straight.  That being said…

The Willard district crowned their champions last night.  Central wins a tough battle with Hillcrest 63-60 avenging their defeat of 2 weeks ago.  Johnny Gray hit two free throws with under 10 seconds left, and Sam Smith missed a tying 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the Bulldogs onto the sectional round.  On the girls side, Lorelei Snow knocked down 30 points to lead Neosho to their first district title 75-54 over Central.  Central and Neosho next play at SBU on Wednesday against tonights winners in the Ozark district.

And at Lebanon, Waynesville swept the district titles for the second year in a row.  The top seeded boys dropped Rolla 72-46.  While the Lady Tigers, seeded third, edged #1 seed Jefferson City 42-39.

3/26/09 scores and district results

So much going on tonight.  The Ozark district is living up to all the hype as Nixa’s Caleb Thomas hits a 3 at the buzzer to defeat Ozark 61-60 and advance to the finals.  The shot was the first three of the season for Thomas.  Their opponent will be Branson who closed the door on the coaching career of Roy Green by defeating Kickapoo 80-68.

At Cassville, the Cassville Lady Wildcats gave Republic all they wanted before finally falling 51-46.  The lid was on hoop for Republic from the field but the shoot 17 more free throws than the Lady Wildcats and outscored them 17-8 from the stripe to move to the final.  Hannah Elkins had 21 points for Cassville.

In Owensville, the Salem boys continue their surprising run by knocking off powerful Owensville 69-67.  The sixth seeded Tigers will play for the title against state ranked Helias.

And Rogersville is the first area boys team to book a ticket to the state tournament.  The Wildcats downed fifth seeded West Plains 53 -41 to advance.  They’ll next play Wednesday night at Lebanon agains the winner of the Helias/Salem game.

CLASS 1

District 2 at Bakersfield

Eminence has already beaten Lesterville twice this year and stud Austin Brewer is now back.  After scoring 12 points his first game back, can he get back to near full capacity?

  1. Eminence
  2. Lesterville
  3. Dora
  4. Bakersfield
  5. Bradleyville
  6. Bunker
  7. Lutie

Prediction:  This looks pretty clear cut.  Eminence hasn’t needed Brewer to beat Lesterville yet.  They do even better with him.

2/25/09 scores and district results

We have our first district champion of the year as the Rogersville girls defeat Marshfield 60-51 behind 27 points from Najee Donson.  The Lady Wildcats jumped all over Marshfield in the first quarter to the tune of 22-11.  The Lady Jays chipped away only down by 6 entering the fourth, but couldn’t get over the hump.  The #4 seeded Lady Wildcats will next play a week from tonight at Lebanon High School against the winner of the district 9 tournament in Owensville.  Most likely state-ranked #2 St. James.

Other district title matchups were set last night.  On the girls side, in class 4, #1 Webb City and #3 Nevada will meet in Nevada.  In class 5 district 10 at Lebanon, top seed Jefferson City will meet third seeded Waynesville.  The anticipated clash of state ranked #1 Nixa & #2 Kickapoo was set in Ozark. And one boys final was set as class 5 district 5 top seeds Central and Hillcrest will get a rematch in Willard.

2/25/09 state girls basketball rankings

There’s a new sheriff in town, and it’s Exeter.  I believe for the first time ever, the Exeter Lady Tigers have ascended to the number one position in the state girls basketball rankings.  Montose’s loss to Osceola last week opened the door, and Exeter continued to impress.  Now they will enter district competition as the states number one class 1 team.  So will Fair Grove who continues to sit atop the class 3 rankings.  Skyline remains at number six.  Already in districts as number one is Nixa.  Sharing a class 5 district with state number two Kickapoo, one of the top teams in the state will be eliminated before the state tournament.  The class 4 poll is almost devoid of an Ozarks presence, but Webb City hangs on at number ten, down from number seven the previous week.  On the opposite end of the spectrum, the class 2 poll is dominated by Ozarks teams again.  Sparta now leads the three local entries in the top 5 coming in at number three, up two spots from last week.  Osceola also climbs two to number four with Couch dropping three places to number five.  Thayer and Laquey hold down numbers seven and eight.  Thayer up two places from number nine last week leapfrogging Laquey who falls one spot.

2/25/09 state boys basketball rankings

Some movement in this weeks boys state basketball rankings.  Class 5 and class 1 hold steady.  Central remains at number eight and Branson at number nine in class 5.  Chadwick number three and Eminence  number four in class 1.  In class 4, Aurora takes one step up to number three, their highest ranking of the year.  While Laquey once again rests at number two in class 2.  Thayer moves up from number nine to eight, with Clever dropping three spots to number nine.  And in class 3, Seneca falls one spot to number five while Mt. Vernon remains at number seven

2/24/09 scores and district results

The seeds hold tonight in most games, with two notable exceptions.  At Cassville, the Reeds Spring & McDonald County boys move on.  The Carthage & Hillcrest girls win at Willard.  And at the class 5 district 11 at Ozark, Kickapoo holds off Glendale down the stretch 75-68, while Nixa sets up a contest with Ozark by beating Parkview 57-44.  But in Marshfield, #1 seed Bolivar gets dropped b7 #5 West Plains 62-57.  And in Owensville, sixth seed Salem upends a good and tall Eldon team 78-63.  Their reward in the next round?  State ranked hosts Owensville.

And on the individual front, Everton’s Garrett Gladden had a monster game with 35 points and 23 rebounds.  But it wasn’t enough as the Tigers fall to Crane 66-56.

Already a number one seed has fallen.  Rogersville takes it to top seed West Plains at Marshfield and gets the upset 55-51 in overtime.  The Lady Wildcats will next face the host Lady Jays of Marshfield who knocked off Bolivar 61-45.

And the 5s have it at Lebanon with both of the bottom seeds winning to move on tonight.  Camdenton is the victim both times as the Lady Bulldogs of Rolla win 59-46, and Jefferson City eliminates the Lakers 48-41.
