Big win tonight for the Purdy Eagles as they defeat #4 Blue Eye 8-7 in an extra inning thriller. Trailing 4-3 entering the 7th, the Bulldogs David Gilley put Blue Eye on top 6-4 with a three run homer. But Purdy would answer back with authority as Chris Bennett smacked a two run bomb of his own to send the game into extra frames.
Blue Eye once again threatened in the top of the eighth, but a ‘step on third, throw to first’ double play got the Eagles out unscathed and set the stage for the final drama. With the bags full of Eagles in the bottom half, Chris Bennett again stepped to the plate and got his third RBI of the night when he was hit by a pitch to bring home the game winner. Purdy wins 7-6.
For Coach Joshua Hughes and the Eagles, it’s their first win over Blue Eye since the first game of the ’05 fall season. And should set up some high drama if the two squads should happen to meet again in the state quarterfinals. Great game, great win for Purdy, and possibly great motivation for Blue Eye for the rest of the season.

The Missouri Basketball Coaches Association also released their academic all-state teams last week, and as usual, the Ozarks were well represented. Nine players were selected on the girls side from eight different area teams. The Bolivar Lady Liberators placed both Lindsey Lehman and Katy Roweton on the squad. On the boys squad, fifteen area players were honored from thirteen Ozarks schools with six of those coming from COC teams. Glendale (Andrew Osborn and Brock Fick) and Nixa (Conner Bacon and Patrick Chandler) each had two players selected. And special cheer for those players who were selected all-state for both their basketball and academic skills. This year, Aurora’s Ryan Carmichael, Ozark’s Jordan Nuckolls, and Abby Reith of Catholic were so honored. Congratulations and thank you to all our academic all-state honorees. You’ve represented the Ozarks well and made us very proud.

Got to take in a matchup of two of the areas top pitchers tonight. Catholic’s Joel Harrington and Monett’s Kyle Coatney. The Irish traveled to Barry County to take on their district opponent on their home field. From the outset Harrington appeared just a little bit off, seeming like he couldn’t quite get comfortable. While Coatney was strong from the beginning, hitting his spots as usual when he’s on.
Kyle Coatney deals as third basemen Kirk Moore waits.
After a scoreless first, Monett drew first blood as catcher Preston Thompson went deep to left with a solo shot. The left hand hitting Thompson got good contact, hit the ball high, and with the wind blowing out to left, it was more than enough to put the Cubs up 1-0. That’s how it would stand until the sixth. Despite his struggles, Harrington continued to battle and even dazzled at times. The homer was the only tally for Monett until Jake Smith drove in 2 runs with a bases loaded single in the bottom of the sixth.
That would turn out to be all Monett needed as Coatney took care of the rest, holding Catholic without a hit until the top of the seventh and finishing with a one hit, 3-0 shutout. Thompson was the hitting star going 3 for 3 adding 2 singles to his home run. Harrington goes the distance for Catholic and pitches well enough to win, but the Irish just can’t overcome a great performance from Coatney today. Round one goes to Monett. But don’t be surprised if we see these two matching up in districts at the end of the season.

The Missouri Basketball Coaches Association released their All-State teams yesterday. 26 girls and 15 boys from the Ozarks were selected. The Sparta girls garnered the most selections with three, Kayla Coffer, Brooke Stevens, and Tashina Tennis. The girls teams from Webb City, Nixa, and Exeter had two selections each. And Nixa’s Jim Middleton, Skyline’s Kevin Cheek, Jerry Songer of Sparta, and Jason Cole of Exeter were each named the Richard Fairchild coach of the year in their respective classes. Kelsey Williams of Eminence was the only Ozarks freshman named on either the boys or girls side. Eight juniors and four sophomores on the girls side. Three juniors and one sophomore for the boys, so a lot of talent will be returning next year. Congratulations to all area honorees.

6:15 AM – The Fair Grove Lady Eagles simply decided they would not let their season end in a manner they were not accustomed to. The California Lady Pintos were not ready for what Fair Grove was accustomed to. The end result was a dominating 82-52 victory for Fair Grove in the class 3 third place game. Fair Grove lead by 14 after one period, 22 at the half, and it just continued to grow from there. Four Lady Eagles go for double figures with both Erin and Mollie Gavin breaking the 20 point mark. Erin had 24, Mollie 21 to go along with 14 rebounds, Kristen Link 13, and Rachel Edwards 11. No California player scored more than 9 points as they shot only 29.8% from the field for the game. A memorable finish to a memorable season for Fair Grove as they finish the year third in state with a record of 29-3. Thanks Lady Eagles.
