Some big matchups last night in different sports across the area.  On the diamond, undefeated Cassville took their 12-0 record to class 4 Willard who stood at 13-4.  The fans were treated to a pair of excellent performances by the pitchers.  Justin Cobb for Willard and Jake Nolan of Cassville.  The home crowd went home happy as Lucas Rhoten drove home the eventually game winning run in the bottom of the fifth.  John Latham came on to nail it down for the Tigers and get the save, and Willard wins 3-2.

On the soccer pitch, the top two girls teams in the area (Glendale and Ozark) squared off in a great game that wasn’t decided until the last minute.  Ozark took the lead six minutes in on an Eva Schwert.  Twenty-three minutes later, Glendale’s Karis Hefton struck from 15 yards out to even it up 1-1.  And that’s where it would stand until the 90th minute when Molly Brewer found Glendale senior Jeni Frewin in space.  Frewin calmly sized up charging Ozark goalie Paige Hemphill and slotted the winner past her to give the Lady Falcons the 2-1 win over their district rivals.

Finally, in boys golf, Webb City broke Ozarks five year grip on the COC Large Division Tournament title by narrowly defeating the Tigers 314-316. All five Cardinal golfers shot 81 or better to take the win.  Republic’s Nate Oliver took medalist honors with a 2 under par 70.

For those foes of the Catholic baseball team hoping to catch the Irish while Joel Harrington is still struggling somewhat, I have bad news for you.  It may be about to come to an end.

Harrington still seemed a little bit off yesterday in Catholic’s 9-5 victory over Purdy.  But outside of a Daniel Barrientos homer in the second inning, he didn’t give up much in his 6.1 innings of work as he picked up the win and struck out 7.

Purdy grabbed the early lead with Trent Goetz leading off the game with a walk, stealing second, advancing on a wild pitch, then scoring on a ground ball.  The bottom of the second saw Barrientos go deep to give the Eagles the 2-0 lead.
