And we finish getting caught up on News-Leader stories with the announcement of their Athletes of the Year. If you look at past winners of the awards, the News-Leader definitely favors multi-sport athletes. And this year is no exception. Selected all-state in both volleyball & basketball, and nearly qualifying for state in track & field, Glendale’s [...]

Now we’re back to just a week ago and it’s the News-Leader’s All-Ozarks Baseball team. And with a pitching staff of Ethan Mather, Tyler King, Dalton Friend, Landon Jarrett, David Gilley, John McDermid, Grant Gordon, & Timmy Townsend, you wouldn’t need much offense with these guys. Ozark, Nia, & Rolla all land two first teamers. Joplin & Ozark both have three players selected overall. Strafford’s Caleb Barnum is the only player from class 2 to crack the first team. Two class 2 players, Gilley and Caleb Schaffitzel of Fair Grove, made the second team. No class 1 players were selected at all.

Another item from a couple of weeks ago. The 2009 News-Leader All-Ozarks girls soccer team. Glendale & Catholic dominate the teams with the Lady Falcons snagging four first team & one second team spot, and the Lady Irish three and one. Kickapoo added two first teamers and one second. Only Ozark’s Paige Hemphill & Jody McFarlen of Bolivar were able to crack the first team from outside of Springfield.

Continuing the ‘catching up’ theme, here the Joplin Globe’s 2009 All-Area Boys Basketball Team. Player of the Year & Coach of the Year both went across the border to Kansas, but the Ozarks still had great representation. Eight members of the 16 man first team, nine out of 15 second team members, and the only freshmen to be selected above honorable mention in Alex Oserowsky of Thomas Jefferson. Underclassmen are all over the team with five first teamers including Miller sophomore Justin Jack, two on the second team, and 5 on the third team. Congrats to all those selected.

Catching up on some things, the all-state girls soccer team was announced a couple of weeks ago. Springfield Soccer has the full team for each class. You can use the links below to get to each one. Leading the way from the Ozarks is Catholic who placed six players on the class 1 first and second teams. Five of which are sophomores. Glendale nabbed three spots on the class 3 team. And Jonna Welch of Bolivar is the lone area selection in class 2 making the first team.

The west was best in last weekends Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association All-star Series last weekend in St. Louis. The boys from the west side were undefeated for the weekend winning three games as the class 3 contest ended in a tie. Colton Jones of Mansfield had the big highlight for the Ozarks as he slugged a 2 run homer in the class 2 game. Kendall San Paolo nearly joined him in going deep in the class 3 contest hitting what ended up being a 400 foot triple. All-state teams were also picked and I’ll be posting them next. Congrats to all our area all-stars.
Class 1
MVP – Logan Kirchhoff, Santa Fe

The Midwest Nationals are in full swing and both teams are headed for big tournaments this weekend. The Blue squad features some serious pitching power from the Ozarks. Ozark’s Ethan Mather, Nixa’s Patrick Chandler, Joel Harrington of Catholic, Dalton Friend of Rolla, Republic’s Tyler King, Blue Eye’s David Gilley, and a guy that probably isn’t that familiar to most Ozarks baseball fans, but should be. Grant Gordon of Salem. You’ll hear more about him in my all-OzarksSports.Net baseball team before too long. King, Mather, and Gordon are a combined 8-1 so far this season and each sports a sub 3.00 ERA. They head off to Louisville, Kentucky where they will face teams from Indiana, Ohio, & Kentucky at the University of Louisville.
The Red team has a more offensive flavor to it local players. Jeb Clark of McDonald County, Webb City’s Patrick Drake and Tyler Burgess, Branson’s Tee Helsel, and Brock Robbins of Republic (who can throw a bit too) all add some good pop to the Red lineup. They head north this weekend to Lincoln, Nebraska for their action. They’ll face competition from Kansas, Nebraska, & the Kansas City area.
Both teams should be a lot of fun to keep up with this summer. Below are the full rosters & remaining schedules for both teams.
