Week 1 review

Well, week 1 is in the books.  As usual, we got some shocks, saw some great performances, and rejoiced that football season has started again.  A number of teams looked fantastic.  Webb City, Branson, Lockwood, & Thayer among them.  Some won in less than impressive fashion like Camdenton, Carl Junction, & Mt. Vernon.  And the Spring River Valley race got turned on it’s head with Lockwood looking great, Jasper beating Pierce City, and Miller starting QB Justin Jack going down.  Now let’s get past the giddiness and dig in for the rest of the season.  We have to get ready for week 2 so it’s time to play everybody’s favorite game…

THE GOOD

Preseason volleyball rankings

The Missouri High School Volleyball Coaches Association released their preseason rankings yesterday and a number of area teams found their way on.  Eminence starts the season atop the class 1 rankings with Winona tenth.  In class 2, Ash Grove is third and Mt. View-Liberty ninth.  Three area teams made the class 3 ranking with Rogersville leading the way at number two.  Mt. Grove follows them at number five and Republic holds down the number nine spot.  And the two area teams that ended last year in the class 4 poll start there as Glendale sits at number five, and Ozark at number seven.

The season starts for real tonight, so everyone gets their chance to play in now.  Good luck to all.

Week 1 picks

And we’re off.  We’ll review the picks on Monday each week to see if I’m a genius or a moron.  The truth is out there.  Early conference matchups dot the landscape.  And a clash of titans highlights the night.

WEEK 1 PICKS

Game of the Week

  • Harrisonville (#6, Class 4) at Webb City (#1, Class 4)
    • As if we need anything else to make this game more interesting, the Cardinals have suffered a rash of injuries to linemen.  Harrisonville has a couple of key injuries also but returns their biggest threat on both offense & defense.  QB Sam Cooper who passed for almost 1,500 yards and rushed for over a 1,000 last year, and LB Sam Dahman who is just a beast of a tackler.  Braxton Baker should be able to carry the mail on the ground, but Patrick Drake will have to have some success in the air for Webb to move the ball.  The key for the Cardinal defense is to contain Cooper.  If they can make him try to beat them with his arm instead of his legs, Boo Rodgers and the other Cardinal DBs should clean up.

Preseason football rankings

I’ll be following two sets of ranking this year.  The AP poll and the MoSports Power Poll.  I actually find the MoSports poll to be a more accurate but it’ll be fun to see how they both stack up.  Here’s where we begin the year.

2009 Spring River Valley Football Predictions

Four teams from the SRVC made the playoffs last year.  Lockwood and Pierce City both fell in the first round.  Miller advanced to the second round before hitting the Thayer roadblock again.  While Greenfield marched to the quarterfinals before they saw their season end.  Does Lockwood’s strong play at the end of last season signal good things for them?  Does Pierce City’s returning experience give them an edge on the championship?  Or will Greenfield and Miller battle for the top spot again?
