2009 Springfield Holiday Wrestling Tournament

Ozark brings home their second consecutive Springfield Holiday Tournament title as they place seven wrestlers in the finals and bring home four class championships.  J.J. Dorrell at 103, Colton Howell at 112, Dustin McClintock at 135, and Zeb Spicer at 152.  Rolla is the only other area team to have multiple champions as Blayne Shockley wins in the 119 class, and Chris Sanders takes the 140.  That leads Rolla to a third place showing overall.  Other area squads in the top 10 include Lebanon at fourth and Willard at seventh.

2009 Holiday Tournament Week - Day 4

Other champions crowned already tonight. Branson wins the Blue division 66-51 over Nixa.  Mt. Vernon wins the Pink & White beating West Plains 49-29.  And Norwood defeats Dora to win the Cabool Tournament.  The Walnut Grove boys championship, the Richland title game, and the U.S. Bank final are all under way with the Gold division game soon to tip.

Webb City is the only area team to find the winners circle on the final day of the KTXR Lady Classic.  The Lady Cardinals rebounded from their loss to Kickapoo to blast Lexington Catholic 62-26 in the 3rd place game.  Glendale lost a heartbreaking 7th place game 53-52 to Shawnee Mission East.  Nixa almost upended Midwest City in the 5th place game.  But two Richa Jackson free throws sealed the win for the Bombers 52-50.  And in a game just completed, Wheeling, IL hangs on to win 50-44 over Kickapoo.  The Lady Chiefs were down 13 at the half but whittled the lead down until they were down 5 with 2 and a half minutes to play.  But couldn’t get any closer.  Great effort from Kickapoo and a deserved second place finish.

2009 Holiday Tournament Week - Day 3

Shocker at Weiser.  It’s no shock that Kickapoo could beat Webb City, but to do it 49-27 by only allowing the Lady Cardinals 5 points in the second half is stunning.  Great defensive effort by Kickapoo and they ran out to a 25-6 first quarter lead.

Meanwhile at the Blue & Gold, Ozark escapes again with a 3 pointer at the buzzer again defeating Strafford 40-37.  Isaiah Monroe hits the dagger tonight as Ozark advances to the Gold championship game.

Lebanon Central Bank Holiday Tournament

  • Conway 43, Bolivar 42 (OT)
  • Lebanon 59, Richland 58
  • Norwood 56 , Ava 54
    • Norwood: Jordan Gray – 27 pts, 7 3s
  • Pleasant Hope 58, Buffalo 36
    • Pleasant Hope: Lauren McCurry – 25 pts

2009 Holiday Tournament W

What a day yesterday.  Four games at the Blue and Gold.  Then the KTXR Lady Classic first round with Webb City’s 65-62 overtime win over Midwest City capping off a tremendous day.  Here’s a few thoughts from each game before we get to the scores.

Blue and Gold

  • Nixa 69, Willard 59 – Nixa is deep, talented, disciplined, well-coached.  The only thing that keeps me from saying they are a serious state-title contender is the lack of go to player.  But I could very easily see freshman Jalen Norman becoming just that type of player by the end of the year.  Continue reading 2009 Holiday Tournament Week – Day 2

2009 Holiday Tournament Week - Day 2 Schedule

Alright folks.  Here’s the schedule for tomorrow.  As for me, I’m taking the day off from my real job to catch a basketball coma.  I’ll be at Hammons Student Center to watch the Blue division of the Blue & Gold.  Then I’ll be off to Weiser Gym to catch the KTXR Lady Classic first round.  I’ll be doing my best to post updates throughout the day.  If I survive, I’ll have a full report Tuesday.

Dear Santa

Dear Santa,

I realize it’s been a long time since I’ve written.  If I remember right I was about 9 years old the last time.  There’s been a little water under the bridge since them.  But with you knowing if I’m naughty or nice I’m sure that you’re fully aware of all that.  No I didn’t stop writing because you didn’t get me that machine gun I wanted.  In retrospect, that was a good thing for me, my family, and the whole neighborhood. Who knows the kind of damage I could have caused trying to shoot birds with that.  It was that growing up thing.  It happens to almost all of us no matter how hard we try to avoid it.

2009

And now we finally get the sportswriters all-state team.  To no one’s surprise Cassville leads the way with 6 players selected for the class 3 team.  RB Joseph Gouvion, OL Dylan Gibson, K Matt Angel, and DL Garrett Mahurin all make the first team.  With LB Devin Linenbrink and DB Josh Lewright making the second team.  Next comes nine different Ozarks squads who place 3 players.  Bolivar, Carthage, Miller, Rogersville, Thayer, and Webb City each have 2 first team and 1 second team pick.  Lamar, Rolla, and Seneca each place 3 players on the second team.

Notables include Carthage’s Brian Poston who, after being left off the coaches all-state team, gets a well deserved class 4 first team selection.  Jeff Pipenbrink of Jasper gives the Eagles their first all-state player in 15 years.  And Hillcrest’ Doriel Green is the only sophomore selected for the class 4 team.   Notable exclusions would include Webb City’s Scott Roderique, Kyle Smith of Lamar, and Cassville’s Trevor Tanner.  Each was a coaches first team pick.
