    All-OzarksSports Baseball Team

    By Joboo | July 1, 2008

Now that the professionals have had their say, I’ll take my crack at it.  And unlike others, I’ll tell you how I’m gonna go about this.  So here are my totally unscientific & highly flexible guidelines.

    1. Class counts only in how dominant the player was relative to players from the same class.  So if a class 4 player and a class 1 player put up the same stats, it’s likely that the class 4 players stats were more outstanding.  Example.  Class 1 & class 4 players both hit .500 for the season.  The second best class 1 average is .475, third best .470.  The second best class 4 average is .425, the third .400.  The class 4 player is further ahead of his peers and had the more outstanding season.
    2. Intangibles count.  Is the player clutch?  Did they do something remarkable?  These things mean something.
    3. Post season progress is important, but not as much as in basketball.  One player can be great and their team still be terrible.
    4. 5 pitchers, 1 catcher, 5 infielders, 4 outfielders, and 1 utility player.  No DH.  I’m a national league guy.
    5. I reserve the right to disregard these guidelines and pick whoever I want.  That’s the power hungry blogger in me coming out.

    All-OzarksSports Baseball Team

    First Team

    Second Team

    Hitter of the year - Cory Kyle, Stoutland - .620/7 HR/36 RBI, .745 OBP, 13 2B

    Pitcher of the year - Ethan Mather, Ozark - 8-0, 2 SV, 1.62 ERA, 60 2/3 inns, 86 K, 20 BB

    Player of the year - Chance Sossamon, Webb City - .459/7/46, 40 runs, 16 2B, 32-of-36 SB, 6-1, 3 SV, 1.64 ERA, 42 2/3 inns, 54 K, 25 BB

There you go.  One man’s opinion.  Twenty-one seniors, ten juniors, and one outstanding sophomore.  Jeb Clark of McDonald County.  Playing in the Southwest Conference with Webb City, Jeb outhit Chance Sossoman .508 to .459, and had as many homers in over 40 less at bats.  Go catch the Mustangs next year to check him out.  And speaking of next year, returning players include 3 first team pitchers (pitcher of the year Ethan Mather of Ozark, Miller’s Tyler Abma, and David Gilley of Blue Eye), almost the entire second team infield, and the area’s leading basher in Winona’s Logan Holthaus.  Logan posted a .458/12/41 line this year while striking out only 5 times in 87 plate appearanes.  Put the Wildcats on your list of teams to watch next year also.

Congratulations to all.  Thanks for a great year.
