At the Barbershop – Post Fireworks Edition

Alright, I survived my last fireworks stand (hopefully), I have completed my summer vacation (San Antonio), and have a mini tour of Missouri on tap this weekend.  So while summer is still upon us, let’s go get a trim at the ol’ barbershop.

I do not consider myself a member of the media.  Yes, I have the website that you behold now.  Yes, I’ve made a few appearances on some radio shows.  But I would be delusional to think I am a media member.  Continue reading At the Barbershop – Post Fireworks Edition

At the Barbershop - 2/5/10

Feeling sick for two weeks can leave you a lot of time to think.  And since my mind is going 100 miles an hour on a normal day, the last thing I need is time to think.  Lewis Black once hypothesized that hearing the dumbest thing he’d ever heard could be the possible cause of an aneurysm.  Now I’m not saying that one of my thoughts may be the dumbest thing you’ve ever heard.  But with a wife and two children that I’d still like to spend a few more years with, I’m not taking any chances.  We’re taking a trip to the barbershop so I can purge myself of potentially lethal thoughts.  If one of them causes you to have an aneurysm, I apologize.  But I don’t think you can prove anything.

Oh the weather outside is frightful, but the basketball is so delightful, and since there’s so much to know, let’s gather round the old barber pole.

Yeah!  In your face Perry Como!  How’s that taste Bing?  Cower in shame Elmo & Patsy!  It’s time for a Christmastime barbershop!  Ho, ho, ho!

At the barbershop – summer edition

Ah, summer.  Time to head to the barbershop for a flattop or buzz cut so you can be cool and sunburn your scalp.  Time for vacation in June, fireworks in July, & back to school shopping in August.  Hittin’ the swimming pool or fishin’ hole.  And when I was young, more than anything, summer meant baseball.  And not just following the Cardinals or Royals either.  I’m talkin’ Little League, Babe Ruth League, Pony League, American Legion, Dixie, it didn’t matter.  Summer was time to play ball.

Unless you are from the Chillicothe, MO area or a Missouri sportswriter, chances are that you’ve never heard of Bob Carter.  But stop by the offices of the Constitution-Tribune newspaper in Chillicothe sometime and mention Bob to the ladies that work out front.  They’ll be happy to inform you.  They’ll show you his portrait on the wall, his old desk, and tell you of his untimely death.  But most importantly, they’ll tell you stories about the life of the man known affectionately in that area of NW Missouri as “Bullet” Bob.

When it’s time to relax…

That silence you hear is the sound of a deep breath.  For 5 days, nothing is happening in the Ozarks high school sports world except practice.  As Little Father said in Remo Williams “Silence, blessed silence.”  But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t anything going on at OzarksSports.Net.  On the contrary.

I’ll have another Barbershop column for you this week, we’re working on getting the early season boys lacrosse scores, and starting tonight I’ll begin posting my baseball previews.  First, a list of players to watch, teams to watch, and college signees.  Then conference by conference previews.  I’ve talked to a few coaches to get their insights, and to give a more in depth looks at their respective teams.  Those talks with the coaches will be included in the conference previews and they are… Continue reading When it’s time to relax…

In 1988, I graduated from Richland High School.  I watched my younger brother play basketball for years after that, attended his graduation ceremonies in the gym, and promptly vowed that I would never again set foot in the school.  Almost 20 years removed from that vow, I have no idea why I made it.  None.  I liked my time in high school, had good friends, no archenemies to fear, I wouldn’t want to do it again but it wasn’t bad at all.  But I’ve been true to my word and have yet to grace the alma mater with my presence.

As I travel through this progression of events & experiences known as life, I pick up little bits of wisdom along the way.  Some I gain from simple observations I make.  Others come from things shared by my fellow man.  But the most lasting lessons come from my own experiences.  It was through this path that I gained a most valuable insight yesterday evening.  One that I feel compelled to share with all of you.  May your own lives be richer for it.

At the barbershop – 12/18/08

When I was a  kid, we had a real, live barbershop in our town, as many towns do.  And most of the men (and their sons) in town got their hair cut their hair cut there.  It looked like it had been transported straight out of the early 20th century.  Two big, comfy barber chairs.  Shoe shine bench that you had to climb up on in order to receive the service, not that I ever had shoes on that could be shined.  Old, wooden, straight-backed bench that 3 people could sit on, or 2 big people as was more often the case.  Lots of old newspaper clippings were framed and on the walls, or were just stuck to the mirror behind the chairs.  A living, breathing piece of American history.
