A couple of brilliant performances by area golfers during today’s final round of the MSHSAA state boys golf championships, but the closest any area team or golfer can get to a state title is third. In class 1, New Covenant Academy made a charge up the leader board taking third. Garrett Dollins lead the way with a 73, the best round of the day, to make all-state at sixth. Joining him was teammate Tyler Spencer who finished in a tie for eleventh. And in class 3, Jacob Fair of Monett shot a 71 to vault into the top ten finishing in a tie for fifth. Ava’s Josh Wendler also made all-state finishing in 14th. Webb City finished ninth overall as a team. Willow Springs held off strong challenges from a number of teams to take third in class 2. Mt. Vernon, Springfield Catholic, and Mountain Grove were among the challengers, finishing sixth, seventh, and eighth respectively. Individually, Eric Wilmoth of Mt. Vernon was the only area golfer to make all-state finishing tied for ninth. The big news after day 1 of the state boys golf championships is the dogfight that’s shaping up for day 2 in class 4. Glendale and Rockhurst are tied atop the leaderboard with Rock Bridge, Poplar Bluff, and DeSmet all within eight strokes. Individually, Ozark’s Justin Timberlake stands two shots back and Rayvaun Christenson of Glendale three back. In class 1, New Covenant Academy is in fifth place, 20 shots adrift of leader Marceline. New Covenant’s Tyler Spencer is the only area golfer in the top 10, tied for sixth, but only trailing by six strokes. Westminster Christian is trying to run away with the class 3 competition with a day 1 lead of 17 strokes. But seventh place Webb City stands only four shots out of second place. Josh Wendler of Ava is part of a logjam in ninth place individually, only five shots back of the leader. Lebanon was your odds on favorite to win their district and move on to state in boys golf last week. The Yellowjackets got 30% of the vote to lead second place Ozark by 8 percentage points. Coming in third in the voting, but finishing ahead of everybody on the links, was Glendale. The Falcons took only [...] Some big performances this evening. Liberal defeats Pierce city in the SRVC behind a no-hitter for sophomore pitcher Colton Selvey. Parkview’s Spencer Johnson has a 4 for 4 day in the Vikings 11-5 win over Waynesville. Stockton unloads two grand slams and a three run bomb in a 19-4 win over El Dorado Springs. Kevin Martin and Craig Johnson provided the salamis while Robbe Ewing put up the 3 spot. And Kickapoo and Hillcrest went 10 innings before Brandon Smith got a walk off hit to give the Chiefs a 12-11 win. BASEBALL
History last night in the Blue Eye/Spokane game. The Bulldogs won 27 to 4 and Blue Eye’s Zach Campbell hit 4 home runs to tie the state record. The team hit 8 homers which is the third best total in state history. But the big news is that for Mr. Campbell, that makes 6 consecutive at bats with home runs which smashes the old state record of 4 and ties the national record. The Bulldogs are scheduled to play at Billings tonight. We’ll let you know if Zach can keep the streak alive. And speaking of records, if the stats I have for Fordland’s Tyler Swanson are correct, he’s in line to grab an unbeatable pitching record. So far this season, 40 innings pitched, 0 earned runs for a 0.00 ERA. The 40 IP without an earned run is already the 3rd best streak ever. But the record for ERA is 0.127. Good luck Tyler. On the soccer pitch, Rolla & Adrian Pogue’s shutout streak comes to an end at 7 games as Jeff City defeats the Lady Bulldogs 2-1. And district golf kicked off with Webb City winning the class 3 district 6 meet at Cassville Golf Club by a single stroke over Monett 336-337. But Monett did bring home the individual medal with Jacob Fair shooting a 73 for the win. BASEBALL
One streak is gone as Conway’s scoreless streak comes to an end, but they still get a good win beating a solid Norwood team 7-5. Trailing 5-3 after the second inning, the Bears plated 3 in the third and held the Pirates scoreless the rest of the way to get the win. Jacob Childers and Tyler Perryman both went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored for Conway. While Nathan Huckaby had 4 RBI. Another streak is still alive as Rolla’s Adrian Pogue recorded her seventh consecutive shutout leaving her one shy of the state record. The Lady Bulldogs got goals from Olivia Cox, Katelyn Maddy, Taylor Tronstad, Maria Vincent, and Kaylyn Stoll as they downed Joplin 5-0. To tie the record, Pogue and her teammates will have to shutdown a Jefferson City team that has only been shutout twice this season. They’ll face the Lady Jays Monday at Rolla. And it was a big day for boys golf yesterday as the COC Large and Big 8 held their conference tournaments with Ozark and Mt. Vernon coming out on top. And Lebanon fought through the windy conditions to win the Aldo Sebben Relays in Springfield. BOYS GOLF Missouri State Aldo Sebben Relays at Bill and Payne Stewart Golf Course 1. Lebanon – 301 We’ve had a number of signings this spring. So I thought it would be a good idea to get caught up on them. If you know of someone we’ve left off, just leave us a comment and we’ll add them right on. BOYS Baseball
