How to Help Out the Scoreboard Guy

Great news yesterday that Guy Newcomb was awake, off the ventilator, and improving, but he’s still in the neuro trauma ICU unit at Cox South & still needs your prayers.  And while Guy and his family have family, friends, and a church that have been giving them great support, this long of a hospital stay generates huge bills even with insurance.  Add to that recovery time, lost wages, etc. and one incident in the current economy can devastate a family’s pocketbook for years and years to come.  And while neither Guy nor Vicki would ask for it, I know the need for assistance is there.  So here are two ways you can help out and be a blessing to the Newcomb family.

  1. For those of you who would just like to donate money to help out, an account has been set up at the Bank of BolivarContinue reading How to Help Out the Scoreboard Guy

Ozarks Conference Calls

Having straightened out the nickname situation in the Ozarks (and honestly, you feel better for it don’t you) and with the fall sports season still a little way off, I felt the need to try to take on another project.  Inspiration wasn’t too far away as the recent furor over college conferences brought to mind some issues with Ozarks schools and conferences.  “What issues?” you ask.  Here’s a few.

  1. Independent schools. Being an independent in the high school ranks is rough.  No all conference teams.  Much tougher to get support for all-district, all-state, etc.  Dead zones in scheduling as well as just a tougher time scheduling.  Five Ozarks schools are currently independent.  El Dorado Springs, Greenwood, McDonald County, Nevada, and Springfield Central.
  2. Travel costs. Some conference teams have a lot of ground to cover which runs up high travel costs.  And with the current economic environment, that can be brutal.  Continue reading Ozarks Conference Calls

He’s Awake!

Guy Newcomb is awake and off the ventilator!  His wife has posted all the details at Pray4Guy, and he still has a ways to go, but it’s a major step in the right direction.  Thanks to everyone that’s been praying, and keep it up.  I will have an announcement tomorrow on how to be a help [...]

Scoreboard Guy Friday Update

Guy Newcomb is slowly but steadily improving at Cox South.  But as Vicki told me the other night “We’re still in the woods looking for the way out.”  You can get all the details at Pray 4 Guy.  But his lungs are healing which is the biggest thing, and he’s been responsive to the nurses, doctors, [...]

Prayers For the Scoreboard Guy

Just got word that Guy Newcomb was seriously injured in an accident Sunday and is in the hospital.  Please pray for him, his wife and children, and the whole Newcomb family.  I’ll let you know more as I can.

Oops!

Sorry for the downtime folks.  A software update that had some issues.

What's In a Name?

When Jack Hittinger of the Waynesville Daily Guide first arrived in the Ozarks, one of the first articles he wrote was on the lack of creativity with team nicknames in Missouri. It was done tongue in cheek but he received some heated responses to it. But looking at the numbers, you have to admit that he had a point. For example, of the 122 schools that I cover, 20 have a mascot that is unique. The other 102 break down like this…

  • Tigers – 21
  • Eagles – 12
  • Bulldogs – 11
  • Wildcats – 10
  • Bears & Pirates – 6
  • Cardinals & Indians – 5
  • Blue Jays/Bluejays & Hornets – 4
  • Lions & Panthers – 3
  • Comets, Cougars, Falcons, Trojans, Warriors, & Wolves – 2

That’s 17% of the schools in the area calling themselves the Tigers. Half of the COC-Large teams are nicknamed Tiger. Statewide is the same with 11% of the schools in the state carrying the Tiger moniker.

Now I’m not criticizing. There’s history behind some of these and people get connected to the names. But just for fun, let’s take a look at what it possibly would look like if every school had a unique mascot, and my suggestions that could make that possible.

Is it a Record?

Since I started my ad selling effort yesterday, today I’m offering something for free.  To bring balance to OzarksSports.Net.  But it’s at the end of the article so you’ll have to read all the way through.

Among many other things, I am a stat geek.  And I’m OK with that.  Many sports fans are.  If you’re going to be geeky about something, stats rank well ahead of many other less cool things.  Like African rulers, mineral water, or Twilight.  And part of being a stat geek is that I LOVE records.  Not the things that look like overgrown black CDs that we had when I was young (I think I still have a Men At Work record somewhere at my parents house).  I’m talking records achieved on the field of athletic competition.  The most points, fewest runs, best field goal percentage, highest hitting percentage, lowest yards allowed per game, most consecutive free throws hit, most game ending putouts made in games of less than seven innings that ended with a left handed pitcher on the mound and an umpire with a last name starting with the letter ‘W’ behind the plate.

Time to Make the Donuts

I am a man who loves his wife.  Very much.  And because of this, I want her to be happy.  And since I so greatly want her to be happy, I need to start covering my expenses on this website.  No, her happiness isn’t exclusively tied to that, but why leave a burr under the saddle [...]
