Alright, I survived my last fireworks stand (hopefully), I have completed my summer vacation (San Antonio), and have a mini tour of Missouri on tap this weekend. So while summer is still upon us, let’s go get a trim at the ol’ barbershop.

I do not consider myself a member of the media. Yes, I have the website that you behold now. Yes, I’ve made a few appearances on some radio shows. But I would be delusional to think I am a media member. Continue reading At the Barbershop – Post Fireworks Edition

One area contender seems well on their way to a state championship, another is in an absolute dogfight after the second day of the state wrestling championships. With nine wrestlers still alive and five of them going to individual titles tomorrow, Neosho seems to be fully in the drivers seat in class 3 with a 42 point lead over second place Oak Park. Ozark falls back to third but still has a great chance at second place. Rolla sits in seventh, with Carthage, Willard, Nixa, and Webb City all in the top 20.
Seneca, on the other hand, has everything to play for tomorrow. Seneca leads Brookfield by only 7.5 points, and third place Centralia is only 14.5 points back. The Indians have the most wrestlers remaining with eight, but both Brookfield and Centralia have four wrestlers in title matches, while Seneca has only three. Big matches include Colbey Skaggs taking on Centralia’s Jared Fricke for the 125 title, and Jacob Rhoades facing off with Centralia’s Dakota Gilbert at 152.

Day one is complete at the Missouri state wrestling championships and 3 area teams are in prime position for a title. The big battle is in class 3 where Neosho holds a 37-30 lead on Ozark after day one. Both teams have nine wrestlers alive in the championship brackets, and four remaining in wrestlebacks. A key match early today will be in the 112 division where Ozark’s Dmitry Loftis and Neosho’s Joe Barnes will face off for a spot in the semifinals. Rolla also made a solid first day showing grabbing the eighth position.
In class 1, Seneca is in prime position with 11 wrestlers still alive for a title and a 8.5 point lead over second place Brookfield who has only seven wrestlers remaining in the championship bracket.
In class 2, Carl Junction had the best day of the area teams, finishing just a half point out of the top 10 in 11th place. With Reeds Spring a point behind them in 13th. And Waynesville had a solid day one in class 4 finishing in 12th with four of their seven wrestlers still in the championship bracket.

A great weekend for area teams looking to move on to state. Ozark sends their entire team, Seneca and Neosho almost do the same, Waynesville has a solid showing in a strong district, and the class 2 district at Monett left all the teams battered. Here’s the scoop.
CLASS 1
District 2 - Seneca looked to have an easy time with this district and they did winning by over 120 points. They dominated the lover divisions winning at 103, 112, 119, 125, 130, and 135. They send on 13 wrestlers to state and should be the team to beat. Diamond has a respectable showing grabbing two seconds and a third. We very likely could see Seneca’s Nathan Fortner against Diamond’s Craig Vanlue for the state title at 130.

With wrestling districts starting this weekend, here’s a look at the latest team & individual rankings. As well as a breakdown of each squads chances in their class, and key matchups to watch.
CLASS 1
Of all the area contenders, Seneca has the best road to the state championships. They only have one state ranked team to contend with in their district, Knob Noster. And of the Indians strongest wrestlers, only Blake Byrne at 103 and Colby Skaggs at 125 face stiff competition to win and should both make the top two. The key matchup in regards to the Indians chances at state is at 152 where Jake Rhoads of Seneca will battle with Fatima’s Aaron Strope and Knob Noster’s Ryan Hoagland for one of the top two spots. If Rhoads can move on from here, he has a chance to put big points on the board for Seneca at state.

Great moment tonight in Morrisville as Hannah Wilkerson becomes the states all time leading scorer. Former record holder Melissa Grider was on hand in the town she spent her first three years playing for to present Wilkerson the game ball after the record breaking point early in the second quarter. Wilkerson would finish with 32 points as Miller won 75-54. Congratulations Hannah!
In other games Skyline downs newly state ranked Fair Grove 50-48. It’s going to be a real dogfight for the Mid-Lakes title. West Plains continues their strong season with a 48-42 win over Rolla. And Nixa gets a nice 51-34 win at Branson. While on the boys side, Dadeville remains undefeated with an impressive 73-55 win over a very good Fair Play squad.
