    Class 1 & 2 quarterfinal soccer

    By Joboo | November 14, 2008

Bolivar and Catholic were both playing for a space in the final four yesterday in state boys soccer quarterfinals.  Bolivar took to the field in their class 2 matchup with Pembroke Hill which turned into a titanic contest.  Kyle Slagle put the Liberators on top in the first half and they held the lead until the early in the second half.  Then Pembroke’s Ryan Buck netted 2 goals within a minute of each other to take a 2-1 lead.  Bolivar got the equalizer when a Pembroke defender misplayed a ball resulting in an own goal.  The team’s were scoreless through the first OT period and appeared headed to penalty kicks.  But with 5 minutes left, Pembroke’s Ross Payne ripped a 25 yard free kick into the top right corner of the goal, and Bolivar’s season was done.  Great effort and fine season for Bolivar as they finish the season 20-8.

Better news in class 1.  Catholic also had a nail-biter on their hands with Fatima out of Westphalia.  The Irish dominated the game, but Fatima goalkeeper Jordan Bock stood tall making 17 saves for the match.  But the Irish finally broke through with less than 6 minutes to go as freshman defender Reid Harbach escaped the Fatima defense and fired a shot that slipped through Bock’s grasp and into the net.  Catholic makes its first final four in only is second year of competition.  They will now face John Burroughs next Saturday in Fenton for a berth in the championship match.
