Friday state tennis updates

4:20 PM - More good news as the SW Mo players in the class 1 consolation bracket all won their first round matches. The bad news is that they will be joined by Ethan Stoops of West Plains who dropped his winners bracket quarterfinal 4-6, 0-6.
2:55 PM - Nothing but good news this time. In class 1 doubles Humphreys and Newman move onto the semifinals and day 2 with a 6-4, 6-3 victory. And half of the class 2 singles final four will hail from the Ozarks tomorrow as Paul Nahon and John Lazenby both get dominate quarterfinal victories. Could we see an all Ozarks Conference final tomorrow?
2:25 PM - The class 2 doubles consolation first round has been completed with one Ozarks team marching on and one heading home. Alan Liu and Michael McCreary of Joplin won a hard fought 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 victory to move into the consolation quarterfinals. But Alex Belote and Marc Simon of Central see their weekend finish early losing 2-6, 0-6.
2:00 PM - A mixed bag of results at the completion of the first round. After both class 2 doubles teams moved to the consolation bracket, both singles entries won impressive matches. Glendale’s Paul Nahon dominated Jefferson City’s Ryan Claypool 6-2, 6-0. And John Lazenby of Joplin won a terrific 7-5, 7-5 victory over twice beaten Matt Waite of Kirkwood. In class 1 singles, only Ethan Stoops of West Plains won his first round match 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. David Evans and Spencer Newman of Thomas Jefferson join Rogersville’s Jordan Bridges in the consolation bracket. Same story in class 1 doubles. Coleman Bandy and Andrew Prigmore of Thomas Jefferson join the two Forsyth teams of Chase Blackburn/Devon Lean and Ben Cirilio/Patrick Stewart in dropping first round matches. Only Thomas Jefferson’s William Humphreys and Joe Newman won, defeating Alex Goel and John Stillman of John Burroughs 6-0, 6-1. Will be back soon as class 2 doubles second round matches are completing.
11:00 AM - Both class 2 doubles teams fall in the first round and move into the consolation bracket. Alex Belote & Marc Simon of Central drop in straight sets to Andrew and Tony Zhang of Parkway Central 6-1, 6-1. While Joplin’s Alan Liu and Michael McCreary fall 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 to Adam and Ryan King of Lafayette.
10:10 AM - Day 2 of the state tennis championships are underway. The class 2 singles & doubles first round matches started at 9 AM with 2 individuals and 2 doubles teams from the Ozarks seeking a state title. The class 1 first round is about to get underway with 4 Ozarks entries in each competition. Including the entire Thomas Jefferson team that put in a full days work yesterday in taking 2nd in the team competition. Updates as they become available right here.
