Grin Iron Classic
By Joboo | June 9, 2008
Saturday night’s Grin Iron Classic at Kennedy Stadium in Springfield was a tail of 2 halves. An entertaining first half that saw 32 points scored as the West ran out to a 25-7 lead. And a second half that was much more defensively oriented with only 1 score ending with the West ahead 25-13.
The East struck first on the night with a COC connection of Ozark’s Matt Jordan hitting Branson’s Chase Westfall for a 26 yard touchdown. The West scored by the end of the first quarter with Logan Cornish of Lockwood becoming the first of three West QBs to toss a touchdown pass on the night. West offensive MVP Landon Zerkel of Webb City was on the receiving end of Cornish’s 12 yard toss. The extra point was no good and the score wast 7-6 East.
Then the West floodgates opened. They took a 12-7 lead on a 25 yard strike from Republic’s Mitch McHenry to Stephen Poston of Carthage and a missed try after. Jevon Fowler of Joplin got the winning score on the first of his 2 touchdowns on the night with a 1 yard run for an 18-7 lead. And as time expired, Fowler caught a 14 yard TD pass from teammate Cory Rector. The extra point try was good, and the West held for the 25-7 halftime lead.
The second half settled into a defensive battle only broken by Westfall’s 70 yard touchdown catch from Aaron Charleston of Mountain Grove. Westfall’s two touchdown catches secured East offensive MVP honors for him. David Adams of East Newton took defensive MVP honors for the West, with Andre Taylor of Waynesville being named defensive MVP for the East.
