Lions District 26-E All-Star Basketball Classic
By Joboo | June 12, 2008
Almost let these games slip by. They were played last Saturday at the Leggett & Platt Center and resulted in one of the best all-star games we’ve seen.
The girls contest looked like it would be a laugher from the outset as the South ran out to a 12-2 lead. But the North rallied to get within 2. That pattern would repeat throughout the night with the South taking a lead only to see the North squad come back. The final drama started with a 12 point South lead early in the fourth. The North once again rallied and tied the game at 56. Melea Cook of Seneca broke the tie with 50 seconds left to make the score 58-56. But North came right back and pulled even on a basket by Lauren Eagles of Mt. Vernon. Finally, with 11 seconds left, Cook put home a basket from the low post, the North couldn’t respond, and the South won 60-58. Jessica Mitchell of Southwest led all scorers with 15 for the South, and Cook chipped in with 12.
In the boys game, Verona’s Zach Smith was the high scorer with 22 points to lead the South to a 78-61 victory. The North was as close as 3 points with less than 8 minutes to go before the South squad closed with a 19-5 run. Also scoring for the South was Patrick Bennett of Seneca with 12 points, and Denny Farmer of East Newton with 10. The North team was led by Kyle Wicklund of Carthage with 14 points, Paden Bennett of Carl Junction with 12, and Stockton’s Aaron Cramer with 11.
