    MFBCA Academic All-State Teams

    By Joboo | January 9, 2009

Earlier this week the Missouri Football Coaches Association announced their Academic All-State teams.  A number of Ozarks players were selected with Neosho leading the SW Mo contingent with 6 selections.  Thayer, Fair Grove, Catholic, Monett, Salem, and state champion Webb City all placed 4 players.  Congratulations to all who were selected.  Especially to those players who made both the football and academic all-state teams.  Those players are Jacob Eckman & Lance Schneider of Thayer, Caleb Schaffitzel of Fair Grove, Beau Bounous & Kyle Meyer of Monett, Thomas Gori of Catholic, Parker Graham & Austin Lepper of Webb City, and Ryan Howerton of Lebanon.  Thanks boys.  You’ve made us doubly proud.

There is a disappointing side to this though.  It’s obvious that not nearly as many coaches submitted the paperwork to nominate their players for the academic all-state teams as for the football all-state teams.  Which is again sending the exact wrong message to our young people.  It is definitely more work to verify that players are eligible for academic all-state status, but we have to show our kids that we value them as more than just athletes.  And those kids who make the commitment to excel in academics while playing a sport would appreciate being recognized for their efforts in the classroom just as much as on the field.  If your coach is a member of the MFBCA, encourage them to take the time to nominate their student athletes for the academic all-state teams.  If it’s not important to us, it most likely won’t be important to them.
