And we finish getting caught up on News-Leader stories with the announcement of their Athletes of the Year. If you look at past winners of the awards, the News-Leader definitely favors multi-sport athletes. And this year is no exception. Selected all-state in both volleyball & basketball, and nearly qualifying for state in track & field, Glendale’s Kaley Lyons is a great choice as the female prep athlete of the year. Lyons almost made it to state throwing the discus, was one of the better post players in the area on the hardwoods, and was one of the most dominant volleyball players in the state period.
On the other side, the male prep athlete of the year wasn’t quite so renowned for being multi-sport. Although he did have some good success on the track. But Central’s Johnny ‘Quick’ Gray was simply the most breathtaking senior male athlete in the area this year. His nickname inducing first step, athletic moves, and leadership ability helped reinvigorate a slumbering Central basketball program.
Congratulations to Kaley Lyons & Johnny Gray. The News-Leader’s prep athletes of the year.
