Quarterfinal Football Review

A great Saturday of football.  Some great performances, a couple of fantastic finishes, and three area teams took a step closer to state titles.  The Big 8 had a big day.  And a future high school legend took his last trip to the end zone.

CLASS 1

  • Valle Catholic 42, Miller 6
    • Just a dominant effort by the Valle line and by QB Michael Greminger.  The Warriors scored on all five of their first half possessions.  Greminger had a part in the last four as he threw for 197 yards and 3 TDs, and rushed for 62 and a TD in the half.  Justin Jack lead Miller with 59 yards rushing and threw for 129 yards and finally got Miller on the board as time expired with a 7 yard TD pass to Tyler Hinshaw.  The Cardinals see a fine season come to a disappointing end.

CLASS 2

  • Lamar 42, Fair Grove 14
    • For two plays, it looked like it was going to be a long day for Lamar.  Instead, Lamar’s defense turned into a solid wall, the offense scored 42 unanswered points, and the Tigers swept on to the semifinals of class 2.  After the Caleb Schaffitzel took a screen pass 55 yards for a score on the Eagles second play, Fair Grove simply could not stop the Lamar wing T offense.  Lamar rolled to 376 yards rushing on the day as Trenton Doyle lead the way from his QB spot with 142 yards and a score.  Markell White continued his great playoff run with 122 yard and two TDs.  And just for good measure, Doyle threw for 84 yards and two TD passes, both to Andrew Fowler.  Schaffitzel added another TD late, but his brilliant career comes to an end.  Lamar advances to their first semifinal ever.

CLASS 3

  • Cassville 21, Rogersville 20
    • Rogersville showed they were of championship caliber.  Cassville showed why they’re the champions.  Rogersville got on the board early with a 14 play, 80 yard drive to open the game and grab a 7-0.  But they couldn’t strike again and Cassville’s line finally started to assert itself late in the second quarter.  Cassville took the ball with 2:42 left and marched down the field to score on a Joseph Gouvioun 1 yard run to tie it 7-7 at the half.  On their first possession of the second half, Cassville hit the big play as Trevor Tanner hit Josh Lewright for a 66 yard strike to give Cassville a 14-7 lead.  With their ground game going nowhere, the Rogersville offense took to the air as QB Colton Dill would finish with 246 yards passing.  He pulled Rogersville even with a 54 yard TD pass to Grant Clouse, then gave them the lead when he found Sam Zimmer from 26 yards out.  But Cassville’s fate again turned on an extra point.  Devin Linenbrink broke through on the attempt and blocked Gabe Zapata’s kick to keep the score 20-14 Rogersville.  With their backs to the wall, Cassville showed exactly what they’re made of.  Taking over on their own 14 yard line, the black and gold Wildcats set off on a 19 play drive that chewed up over nine and a half minutes.  Tanner went in from 1 yard out, Matt Angel kicked the PAT, and Cassville held off Rogersville’s last drive to take a terrific game.  Both teams are absolutely championship worthy, a great game all around, and a great team moving on.

CLASS 4

  • Webb City 42, Bolivar 20
    • The Cardinals broke open a close hard fought game in the third quarter with two interceptions as they win their 28th straight game.  Bolivar trailed by on 13-6 at the half as the squads traded TDs.  Webb struck first when Patrick Drake hit Austin Daniel from 11 yards out to grab the initial lead in the first period.  Bolivar would answer early in the second on a Josh Moffett TD run from 1 yard out.  The Cardinals would take the halftime lead on a Jamison Cady TD from 10 yards out.  But the third period would be the deciding stanza as first Scott Roderique, then Nathan Ervin intercepted Bolivar QB Kolton Peavey.  The Cardinals turned Roderique’s pick into a Maddy Johnson TD and a two point conversion.  Ervin returned his interception 80 yards for a score and Webb City lead 28-6.  From there, the Cardinal defense made sure it would be enough, holding Bolivar to only 42 rushing yards.  Braxton Baker rushed for 134 yards to lead Webb City while Patrick Drake passed for 113.  Kolton Peavey tossed two TD passes in the fourth and finished with 266 yards, but also tossed three interceptions for the game.  Another great effort from the Cardinals and another trip to the semis.

CLASS 5

  • Raytown South 21, Nixa 15
    • Heartbreak city for the Eagles who looked to be headed to overtime until a bizarre final play turned against them.  Tied at 15 with Raytown on the Nixa 26, the Cardinals QB Dennis Tanner scrambled around for the final 7 seconds looking to find an open receiver.  Finally he was hit with the football popping into the air.  It fell into the hands of Raytown South running back Jerrick Walton.  Walton, who already had scored twice for the Cardinals, turned, headed for the left sideline, picked up a couple of blocks, and outraced the rest of the Nixa defenders to the endzone.  Ballgame Raytown South.  Nixa had jumped to a 9-0 lead on a field goal and Jordan Keeney TD.  But Walton would score from 7 yards out to make the halftime score 9-7.  Nixa recovered their lead on their first drive of the second half as they went 51 yards to make it 15-7.  But that would be all for the Eagles as they only gained 24 yards the rest of the game.  Walton struck again with six minutes to go as he went in from 11 yards out to knot the game at 15 setting the stage for the final drama.  A fine year for Coach Rehagen and the Eagles comes to a end with nothing to hang their heads about.
