State class 1 & 2 baseball recap
By Joboo | May 30, 2008
What a wild last 2 days it’s been in Springfield. Hits, runs, errors, wild pitches, comebacks, avenged losses, and…. Well, let’s take this one step at a time shall we.
Wednesday
The day starts off at 10 AM with the first Class 1 semifinal being a rematch of a game played earlier this year. Stoutland at 20-2 taking on Oran at 23-4. Oran put one of those 2 losses on the Tigers earlier this year with a 4-1 1-hitter on Stoutland’s home field. But history does not repeat itself as Stoutland gets 7 hits, draws 8 walks, and picks up a couple of unearned runs to win 7-4. The Tigers put up 3 in the first and 2 in the fifth to seal the deal. Stoutland’s 2-4 hitters scored all seven runs with Brock Chaffin ending with a line of 0 hits in 0 at bats with 1 RBI, 2 walks, and 3 runs. Cory Kyle goes the distance and strikes out 13 for Stoutland to put them in the championship game for the 3rd straight year.
- Stoutland 7, Oran 4: Stoutland, Cory Kyle - 13 K
The next Ozarks action came at 7 PM at night with Conway at 20-7 taking on once beaten Barstow. The Bears advanced to the semis on the strength of their pitching winning 2-0 and 2-1 in their previous state tournament games. But it seemed to figure that they would need more than 2 runs to beat Barstow. And they did. The Bears broke through in the fourth with Clint Eastburn scoring a 2 out run as he singled, took second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a single to right field by Tyler Perryman, and scored as the right fielder booted the ball. Conway added another pieced together run in the 5th. This time Jacob Childers singled, took second on a throwing error, stole third, and scored on an RBI groundout. Meanwhile, on the mound, Mike Eyman was in control keeping Barstow scoreless through 5 allowing only 2 hits. But in the sixth, the Knights put up 2 to tie the game. And after Bubba McGaughy relieved Eyman in the bottom of the seventh, with 2 outs and runners on second and third, McGaughy let one get away from him that went to the backstop. The Bastow runner scored and the Bears were sent to the 3rd place game.
- Barstow 3, Conway 2
Thursday
Into day 2 and after Oran took the 3rd place game from last year’s champion New Haven 5-2, it was time for Stoutland’s date with destiny. After finishing second the last 2 years, avenging their loss to Oran, and seeing New Haven fall, it seemed destined for the Tigers to seize their first state title. Except that Santa Fe didn’t see it that way. The Chiefs jumped out to an 8-1 lead after the top half of the fifth and used a 4 run seventh to keep a comfortable margin as they win their first state title and finish the season a perfect 20-0. The Tigers take their place in Missouri history as only the second team to finish second 3 years in a row. The 12-7 loss sets Stoutland’s final record at 21-3. A fine season by any measure.
- Class 1 championship - Santa Fe 12, Stoutland 7
Conway again had the late game as they faced Hallsville 15-8 for 3rd place. After scoring 2 runs for 3 games in a row, the Bears got all they needed in the first plating 5 runs on 3 hits and 2 errors. All nine Bears batted in the inning that only ended with a runner picked off third. Kelby Rader went the distance spreading 6 hits and 5 walks throughout the seven innings. Conway finishes at 21-8 with a third place showing. Congratulations to the Bears.
- Class 2 3rd place - Conway 7, Hallsville 3
