State tennis wrapup
By Joboo | May 24, 2008
Overall, a very good weekend for the Ozarks as area athletes claim 2 of the 4 championships available. What looked highly likely yesterday became reality today as the class 2 singles championship was an all Ozarks Conference affair. In the district finals, Glendale freshman Paul Nahon defeated Joplin senior John Lazenby in two hard fought sets. Today, in the state championship match, the tables were turned as Lazenby took a 6-4, 7-5 victory. We should have a lot to look forward to from Nahon the next three years. But after finishing fifth last year, Lazenby was not to be denied.
And in class 1, the Joplin area claimed another state title as the Thomas Jefferson doubles team of Will Humphreys and Joe Newman completed laying waste to the rest of the field with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Dakin Sloss and Orion Wilkinson of Clayton.
No other area players finished in the medals, but still a successful result to the year. Congratulations to all Ozarks players. You’ve made us proud.
