    State wrestling championships

    By Joboo | February 18, 2008

A very successful year for Ozarks wrestlers was capped off Saturday by Monett winning their first state wrestling championship. With only 7 qualifiers, the Cubs needed big performances & got them with 3 state champions helping them take the title with 103 points. Oak Grove & Excelsior Springs finishing second with 99. Here’s other results by class.

    CLASS 1

The lone area participant, Diamond, finished tied for 24th with 20 points. Sophomore Craig Vanlue took 5th at the 103 weight class.

    CLASS 2

A very solid year overall for the Ozarks. In addition to Monett’s win, Seneca took 7th & Bolivar 8th to place 3 Ozarks teams in the top 10. Republic finished 20th, while Reeds Spring & Carl Junction shared 34th place. With 4 finalists all being juniors or below, Monett should make a run at another title next year. Individual area finishers.

    CLASS 3

Another strong showing for the Ozarks in class 3. Neosho finishes just a half point out of third place. And the area places 7 teams in the top 20. Almost every area team finished in the top half of the standings. Carthage was tied for 6th, Ozark took 8th, Waynesville 12th, Nixa 16th, Willard 17th, Branson 2oth, McDonald County & Camdenton tied for 21st, Rolla 23rd, Webb City 26th, & Lebanon in 35th place. Every weight division had a representative from the Ozarks on the podium with 5 individual champions.

    CLASS 4

Kickapoo finishes with a respectable first division finish placing 22nd, while Joplin ties for 41st in a division just dominated by Oak Park. Every Oak Park wrestler except one found the podium including 5 champions. Kickapoo’s finish was fueled by senior Trent Freeman who finished 2nd in the 160 weight division, losing a 6-5 decision in the final.
