2008-09 basketball year in review

Since we’re halfway through baseball season, I thought I’d better do our basketball review before it gets totally lost.  We’ll always remember this as the year of the ladies in the Ozarks as every state championship game features a team from SW Mo.  The Nixa Lady Eagles, Exeter Lady Tigers, and Sparta Lady Trojans each bring home state titles with Sparta running the table at a perfect 31-0.  Joining those three in the Show-Me Showdown finals were the Webb City Lady Cardinals & Skyline Lady Tigers who saw their quest to repeat as champs come up 1 point short.  Columbia was crowded with Ozarks teams.  The Bakersfield, Couch, and Fair Grove girls made the trip.  As did the Chadwick, Laquey, Miller, and Blue Eye boys.  The Blue & Gold was great.  The Tournament of Champions was incredible.  And we were treated to one of the best all around basketball seasons ever.

A couple of explanations before we continue.  This year I’m naming a team & MVP for each class.  I define MVP as the person who has the biggest impact on their team.  In other words, take that player off the team and what is the effect?  Player of the year is based solely on basketball accomplishments regardless of class.  Who did the best relative to their competition.  And game of the year means a game between two Ozarks teams.  So you won’t see Central beating Rock Bridge listed.  With that, here’s some notable moments from the 08-09 basketball season, our All-OzarksSports teams, and a list of seniors that we say ‘Good bye’ and ‘Thank you’ to.

All the teams for the girls side of the Missouri Challenge haven’t been revealed yet.  But the seedings have and the bulls eye is squarely on the back of the Southwest squad.  Coach Jenni Hopkins of Hillcrest will take the #1 seeded team into the competition May 29th & 30th and will face off against the eighth seeded Northwest squad in the quarterfinals.  St. Louis grads the second seed with Kansas City third.  We’ll post the rest of the squads as they become available.

Basketball Academic All-State teams

The Missouri Basketball Coaches Association also released their academic all-state teams last week, and as usual, the Ozarks were well represented.  Nine players were selected on the girls side from eight different area teams.  The Bolivar Lady Liberators placed both Lindsey Lehman and Katy Roweton on the squad.  On the boys squad, fifteen area players were honored from thirteen Ozarks schools with six of those coming from COC teams.  Glendale (Andrew Osborn and Brock Fick) and Nixa (Conner Bacon and Patrick Chandler) each had two players selected.  And special cheer for those players who were selected all-state for both their basketball and academic skills.  This year, Aurora’s Ryan Carmichael, Ozark’s Jordan Nuckolls, and Abby Reith of Catholic were so honored.  Congratulations and thank you to all our academic all-state honorees.  You’ve represented the Ozarks well and made us very proud.

2/16/09 scores

I don’t think I’ll be allowed back into a Webb City girls game after watching them in a losing effort for the second consecutive time.  Republic looks impressive in downing the Lady Cardinals 64-59 despite Kaitlin Jaeger leading all scorers with 18.  The Lady Tigers get double digits from Jamie Holmes, Hannah Daniel, Kayce DuVall, & Alexis Edwards in getting their first COC win of the year.  Exeter gets to 21-1 on the year by downing McAuley 75-52, while Sparta stays perfect with a 45-37 win over Crane.

All the top seeds won at the Weaubleau Boys Tournament, setting up a fourth meeting of the year between #2 seed Weaubleau & #3 seed Macks Creek Thursday night.

2/5/09 scores

Fair Grove continues to roll despite being 2 players down as they win the big matchup with Skyline 68-54.  The Lady Eagles ran up a 14 point lead at the half.  Then held off a Skyline charge in the third period.  The Lady Tigers closed the gap to 5 going into the final quarter, but Fair Grove outscored them by 9 down the stretch for the final margin.  If any doubters were left, this recent stretch since the injuries in which they’ve beaten both Central and now Skyline should have converted them.
