Ta da!!! It’s the 2010 All-OzarksSports.Net Baseball Team. Hooray!! Yeah, I thought since school was about to start again, I needed to finish this off. As always, I will tell you how I go about selecting the team. And also as always, I’m positive I don’t have all the information on every player out there. So I would be happy to discuss players I haven’t selected. So here are my totally unscientific & highly flexible guidelines. And if you think someone was left off, comment or drop me an email with some details. Since it is my team, and I’m not above admitting a mistake, I’d love to hear about them and may even carve out a special place for them.

Another fantastic year of Ozarks hoops. Three state titles courtesy of the Hillcrest boys, and Webb City and Mt. Vernon girls. Tons of teams in the state rankings all year. We saw Hannah Wilkerson run down the all time high school scoring mark, then make a run to Columbia. We witnessed possibly the national high school boys basketball highlight of the year when Trey Starks launched himself into the rafters of Mizzou arena and over Oakville’s Garrett Reeg. We prayed as Stephanie Phillips stopped coaching to renew her fight against cancer. And we rejoiced as she came back to guide her team to the final four. We followed the rise of newcomers to the state rankings. Verona and Richland on the girls side. Thomas Jefferson and Gainesville on the boys. We cheered all the buzzer beaters, big wins, great plays, comebacks, defensive stands, hustle plays, razzle dazzle, and gutsy losses. And now, like always, we say goodbye to those seniors who gave everything they had for their schools, for their towns, and for us, and leave us with so many memories. Here’s the year in review.

As always, I like to wait until all the pros have their say on all-state, all-area, all-Ozarks, etc. before I chime in with the all-OzarksSports.Net team. I don’t want to be accused of unfairly swaying anyone. (The Globe hasn’t published theirs yet, but I can’t hold back anymore. If Jim & Anvil get swayed, so be it.) But unlike others, I tell you how I go about selecting my team. Also I am open to discussion for players I haven’t selected because I know I haven’t seen everything on everybody. So here are my totally unscientific & highly flexible guidelines. And if you think someone was left off, comment or drop me an email with some details. I’d love to hear about them.
- Class counts only in how dominant the player was relative to players from the same class. So if a class 4 player and a class 1 player put up the same stats, it’s likely that the class 4 players stats were more outstanding. Example. Class 1 & class 4 players both hit .500 for the season. The second best class 1 average is .475, third best .470. The second best class 4 average is .425, the third .400. The class 4 player is further ahead of his peers and had the more outstanding season.
- Intangibles count. Is the player clutch? Did they do something remarkable? These things mean something.
- Post season progress is important, but not as much as in basketball. One player can be great and their team still be terrible.
- 5 pitchers, 1 catcher, 5 infielders, 4 outfielders, and 1 utility player. No DH. I’m a national league guy.
- I reserve the right to disregard these guidelines and pick whoever I want. That’s the power hungry blogger in me coming out.

Since we’re halfway through baseball season, I thought I’d better do our basketball review before it gets totally lost. We’ll always remember this as the year of the ladies in the Ozarks as every state championship game features a team from SW Mo. The Nixa Lady Eagles, Exeter Lady Tigers, and Sparta Lady Trojans each bring home state titles with Sparta running the table at a perfect 31-0. Joining those three in the Show-Me Showdown finals were the Webb City Lady Cardinals & Skyline Lady Tigers who saw their quest to repeat as champs come up 1 point short. Columbia was crowded with Ozarks teams. The Bakersfield, Couch, and Fair Grove girls made the trip. As did the Chadwick, Laquey, Miller, and Blue Eye boys. The Blue & Gold was great. The Tournament of Champions was incredible. And we were treated to one of the best all around basketball seasons ever.
A couple of explanations before we continue. This year I’m naming a team & MVP for each class. I define MVP as the person who has the biggest impact on their team. In other words, take that player off the team and what is the effect? Player of the year is based solely on basketball accomplishments regardless of class. Who did the best relative to their competition. And game of the year means a game between two Ozarks teams. So you won’t see Central beating Rock Bridge listed. With that, here’s some notable moments from the 08-09 basketball season, our All-OzarksSports teams, and a list of seniors that we say ‘Good bye’ and ‘Thank you’ to.

Now that the professionals have had their say, I’ll take my crack at it. And unlike others, I’ll tell you how I’m gonna go about this. So here are my totally unscientific & highly flexible guidelines.
