Kickapoo wins a pitchers duel tonight as they score one in the top of the 7th to send the game to extra innings, then tally another run in the top of the eighth to pull out the 3-2 win over Olathe South. Elsewhere, Catholic bangs out three homers in a 15-6 win over Aurora. And Nixa’s [...]

Greetings from the Motor City. For those of you who are interested, it’s Wisconsin vs. Boston College tonight for the national championship.
But closer to home, Cassville’s Travis Northern continues his scoreless inning streak to start the year. It’s now 14 innings, as he throws 5 scoreless last night in the Wildcats 11-0 win over Reeds Spring. Bo Blisard went 3 for 3 with a homer and 5 RBI to lead the offense. Liberal remains undefeated with 10-0 win over St. Paul Kansas Thursday. And the Red & Blue tournament is in full swing in Springfield.

The last I knew, Walnut Grove and Hermitage didn’t have football teams. But you couldn’t tell it from their score tonight. Hermitage missed an extra point in dropping a 28-13 decision to Walnut Grove. And I have an unconfirmed score of Liberal 28, Miller 0. But they do play football.
Elsewhere, Norwood picked up a big win over class 1 #2 ranked Dora 7-6. And Strafford used 5 home runs and a Rhett Parton 1 hitter to beat Ash Grove 25-0. Chris Berry had 2 of the 5 jacks including a grand slam as he drove in 8 runs.
And on the soccer pitch, Glendale’s Emily Cline netted a hat trick as the Lady Falcons ended Joplin’s run of shootout magic with a 6-0 win.

Just wanted to give a shout out for Ole at Springfield Soccer for the scores from tonight. As I’ve said many times before, no one does soccer better in the Ozarks.
And we have an early contender for line of the year. Last night in Southwest’s 23-10 victory over Hurley, #9 hitter Jake Shrum went 4 for 5, scoring 4 runs, hitting 2 homers, and driving in 6 runs. Now that is getting production from the bottom of your lineup.

Some teams rise up when the stakes are high. Others fall flatter than a Kansas wheat field. Seeing a team make the transition from one who falls to one who stands strong can be exhilarating. Watching a team go the other way can be painful beyond all measure. Friday’s action showed off some of both. And for many of you, you don’t have to search your memory very much to find those teams who have changed lately.
A couple examples of teams that have changed for the better? Cassville. 0-10 a few short years ago and a team that won only 1 district title from ’05 to ’07 despite losing only three games during that stretch. Now, the defending state champs have consecutive wins over excellent teams to win their district title. How about Lebanon? After breaking a 14 year losing streak to Camdenton last year, they put a huge crimp in the Lakers playoff fortunes by starting their own winning streak in the series. I won’t point out teams that have changed for the worse. I’m sure you can come up with those on your own.
Remember to slow down and savor your next to last helping of…

Last week before everyone gets into districts, and it’s going to be sloppy out there for a lot of teams. How will that affect things? Conventional wisdom says whoever can run the ball will win. But conventional wisdom also says always double down when you have 11. But in reality, if you’re playing with the rule that the dealer always stands on 17 (including soft hands, such as an Ace and a six), then double down on a 10 or 11 when the dealer’s up card is less than your total. If you’re playing a dealer who hits on hard 17′s, then also double down your 11 vs. a dealer’s Ace. The point is, conventional wisdom is mostly, but not always right. And specific circumstances can turn conventional wisdom into a hockey puck. In this case, we’re talking about football which can really play havoc with conventional wisdom.
That being said, I confidently predict a fine week of picks. Which, according to my paragraph up above, means I’ll be reeling in shock at about 9:45 PM. But by then we should also have a much clearer picture of the title chases in the COC Large, SCA, SRVC, & WEMO. I don’t know if the pinball machine will still be plugged in from last weeks score fest, but there looks to be a couple of high scorers again tonight. So sit back & enjoy. And while you do, read what I think all about it in the ….

It’s a week to get some questions answered. Such as “Just how good is (Branson, Carthage, Rogersville, Nixa)?”. Or “Was the win by (Jasper, Cabool, Parkview) a fluke or are they ready for breakout seasons?”. How about the ever popular “Surely (Camdenton, Hillcrest, Cassville, Ozark) is better than they looked in week one arent’ they?”. I don’t know if we’ll have all the answers after tonight, but we’ll have more. Some great games on tap tonight. Nixa & Carthage clash to see who will be Webb City’s main challenger in the COC Large division. Speaking of the Cardinals, I’ll be making the journey south of the border to watch them take on the Rogers Mounties while a few blocks over Parkview will be clashing with Heritage. Thayer & Mountain Grove will be doing battle. And Rogersville takes the drive down to Branson to take on the Pirates. Here they are with no preservatives added…

And we’re off. We’ll review the picks on Monday each week to see if I’m a genius or a moron. The truth is out there. Early conference matchups dot the landscape. And a clash of titans highlights the night.

2008 saw the COC Small Division make some big noise in the playoffs. Bolivar dropped highly regarded Union before falling to the state champs, Webb City, in class 4. And it took the state champs in class 3, Cassville, to end the run of Rogersville in the quarterfinals. Both seem ready to do it again. Can anyone else step up?
