4:10 – We’re one hour away from the tipoff of Kickapoo vs Blue Springs on the girls side. The Hillcrest boys will take on Park Hill South at 8:30. We’ll have updates throughout the night right here. The first girls semifinal is under way with nationally ranked Incarnate Word with a 14 point lead over Ft. Zumwalt West midway through the third period. This will be the fourth time in the last 20 years that the Ozarks has had both a boys and girls team in the final four of both of the biggest classes. In 2005, Kickapoo sent both boys and girls on the class 5 side, with the Willard boys and Ozark girls in class 4. Both of the girls teams won state titles. Ozarks teams brought home three state titles in 2003 with the Kickapoo and Ozark boys, and Kickapoo girls getting the hardware. And in 1990, the Marshfield girls won the only championship for SW Mo. What will be this year? We shall see, but it starts in less than an hour.

CLASS 4
At Hammons Student Center, Springfield
- Girls – Webb City 57, St. James 36
- Last year, the key to beating Webb City was to beat their press and stop Kaitlin Jaeger. But as Webb City displayed Saturday against St. James, even if you do hold Jaeger down this year, you’re still likely to get smoked. Balanced scoring and speed by the bucketful carried the Lady Cardinals to the win at HSC. St. James hung around early but a 17-2 Webb run gave them an 18 point lead in the second quarter. St. James used solid free throw shooting to stay close, and pulled within 6 in the third before a 12-4 run by the Lady Cardinals keyed by a Kyndal Clark 3 pointer removed any more suspense. What a day yesterday. Four games at the Blue and Gold. Then the KTXR Lady Classic first round with Webb City’s 65-62 overtime win over Midwest City capping off a tremendous day. Here’s a few thoughts from each game before we get to the scores.
Blue and Gold
- Nixa 69, Willard 59 – Nixa is deep, talented, disciplined, well-coached. The only thing that keeps me from saying they are a serious state-title contender is the lack of go to player. But I could very easily see freshman Jalen Norman becoming just that type of player by the end of the year. Continue reading 2009 Holiday Tournament Week – Day 2

After winning their first round match 6-1, 6-1, they better than in the next round going 6-0, 6-0. Danielle Benson and Annie Armstong also advance in the consolation bracket with a 6-4, 6-0 win.
3:20 PM – Joplin’s Rachel Lazenby has advanced to the semifinals of the class 2 state girls tennis tournament with her second consecutive dominating performance defeating Timberland’s Savannah Drew 6-2, 6-0. Lazenby won her first round match 6-2, 6-1 and can now finish no worse than fourth in the state. Her record for the year now stands at 31-0.

A huge volleyball matchup lived up to the hype last night as Ozark downed Webb City 2-1. Webb City grabbed the first set 28-26 serving notice that they wouldn’t be an easy win. But Ozark rallied to take an epic second set 29-27. In the third set, Ozark took control and Webb City couldn’t overtake them as the Lady Tigers take the match with a 25-14 final set.
On the soccer pitch Cassville won the second meeting with Monett on the Cubs home field 3-2. While Camdenton took a 2-1 overtime victory from Glendale in Ozark Conference action.

Well there was some outside activity yesterday. Unless they’ve started playing high school golf indoors which I wouldn’t be surprised at. The Ozark Conference held their girls gold tournament yesterday and Kickapoo won their fourth straight title. But only by one stroke over second place Hillcrest. West Plains’ freshman Emily Odom took medalist honors with a 77.

Congratulations to the MO Dream Team 14U girls who took second place at the Division 1 AAU Nationals in Salem, VA last week. The team is made up from players from Catholic, Glendale, & Kickapoo in Springfield as well as players from Branson, Mt. Vernon, Nixa, Ozark, & Verona. Jim Deines is the head coach and he’s assisted by Louis Carrasquillo.
The Dream Team went undefeated in pool play winning their three games against teams from Wisconsin, Louisiana, & Virginia by a combined 56 points. They then downed teams from Alabama, Virginia, & Maryland to reach the finals where they were finally dropped by an Indiana squad. A great run from these young ladies & I’m sure we’ll be hearing more from them in the coming years. Continue reading MO Dream Team take second at nationals
