One more catch up item. With only one set of all-star games left, let’s take a look at what has transpired already on the all-star circuit.
Missouri Challenge
The inaugural Missouri Challenge was a huge hit and a resounding success for the Southwest squads. The fourth seeded boys team swept to the championship behind great 3-point shooting defeating Kansas City 84-80. Branson’s Tate Unruh hit 8 3s and scored 31 points in the championship game to clinch tournament MVP honors. Alex Hall of Kickapoo chipped in with 26 points and 7 3s of his own. The SW squad defeated the Northeast in the first round 107-100 with Unruh again leading the way with 29 points. Then demolished top seed St. Louis 101-80 in the semis to reach the final. The South Central squad which included players from Camdenton, Laquey, & Waynesville were defeated in the first round by the Southeast team with Austin Brewer of Eminence 88-86. Their run would end in the semis though at the hands of Kansas City.

Since we’re halfway through baseball season, I thought I’d better do our basketball review before it gets totally lost. We’ll always remember this as the year of the ladies in the Ozarks as every state championship game features a team from SW Mo. The Nixa Lady Eagles, Exeter Lady Tigers, and Sparta Lady Trojans each bring home state titles with Sparta running the table at a perfect 31-0. Joining those three in the Show-Me Showdown finals were the Webb City Lady Cardinals & Skyline Lady Tigers who saw their quest to repeat as champs come up 1 point short. Columbia was crowded with Ozarks teams. The Bakersfield, Couch, and Fair Grove girls made the trip. As did the Chadwick, Laquey, Miller, and Blue Eye boys. The Blue & Gold was great. The Tournament of Champions was incredible. And we were treated to one of the best all around basketball seasons ever.
A couple of explanations before we continue. This year I’m naming a team & MVP for each class. I define MVP as the person who has the biggest impact on their team. In other words, take that player off the team and what is the effect? Player of the year is based solely on basketball accomplishments regardless of class. Who did the best relative to their competition. And game of the year means a game between two Ozarks teams. So you won’t see Central beating Rock Bridge listed. With that, here’s some notable moments from the 08-09 basketball season, our All-OzarksSports teams, and a list of seniors that we say ‘Good bye’ and ‘Thank you’ to.

The teams have all been announced and the teams seeded for the boys side of the inaugural Missouri Challenge May 29th & 30th. The Southwest team is composed entirely of Ozarks players. While the South Central and Southeast teams both have Ozarks players also. St. Louis grabs the top seed, with Kansas City second, and the Southeast third. The Southwest squad gets seeded fourth and will play fifth seed Northeast in the first round.

Fourteen Ozarks teams remain alive in the smaller classes on the road to Columbia. By Saturday evening that number will be at least 12, and most likely less. Here’s a quick look at each matchup and what to expect. Except for class 3 games at Springfield, all boys games are at 1 PM, and all girls games at 2:45 PM.

CLASS 1
District 2 at Bakersfield
Eminence has already beaten Lesterville twice this year and stud Austin Brewer is now back. After scoring 12 points his first game back, can he get back to near full capacity?
- Eminence
- Lesterville
- Dora
- Bakersfield
- Bradleyville
- Bunker
- Lutie
Prediction: This looks pretty clear cut. Eminence hasn’t needed Brewer to beat Lesterville yet. They do even better with him.
District 5 at Bolivar

As I travel through this progression of events & experiences known as life, I pick up little bits of wisdom along the way. Some I gain from simple observations I make. Others come from things shared by my fellow man. But the most lasting lessons come from my own experiences. It was through this path that I gained a most valuable insight yesterday evening. One that I feel compelled to share with all of you. May your own lives be richer for it.
