2008-09 basketball year in review

Since we’re halfway through baseball season, I thought I’d better do our basketball review before it gets totally lost.  We’ll always remember this as the year of the ladies in the Ozarks as every state championship game features a team from SW Mo.  The Nixa Lady Eagles, Exeter Lady Tigers, and Sparta Lady Trojans each bring home state titles with Sparta running the table at a perfect 31-0.  Joining those three in the Show-Me Showdown finals were the Webb City Lady Cardinals & Skyline Lady Tigers who saw their quest to repeat as champs come up 1 point short.  Columbia was crowded with Ozarks teams.  The Bakersfield, Couch, and Fair Grove girls made the trip.  As did the Chadwick, Laquey, Miller, and Blue Eye boys.  The Blue & Gold was great.  The Tournament of Champions was incredible.  And we were treated to one of the best all around basketball seasons ever.

A couple of explanations before we continue.  This year I’m naming a team & MVP for each class.  I define MVP as the person who has the biggest impact on their team.  In other words, take that player off the team and what is the effect?  Player of the year is based solely on basketball accomplishments regardless of class.  Who did the best relative to their competition.  And game of the year means a game between two Ozarks teams.  So you won’t see Central beating Rock Bridge listed.  With that, here’s some notable moments from the 08-09 basketball season, our All-OzarksSports teams, and a list of seniors that we say ‘Good bye’ and ‘Thank you’ to.

Class 4 & 5 boys district preview

CLASS 4

District 9 at Owensville

As far as the Ozarks fans are concerned, this is a dead man walkin’ situation.  Salem has struggled all year and I can’t see them even getting one win here.

  1. Helias
  2. Owensville
  3. Eldon
  4. Fulton
  5. St. James
  6. Salem

Prediction: Owensville takes it over Helias

McDonald’s All-American Nominees

A number of Ozarks basketball players were included in the Missouri nominees for the McDonald’s All-American Basketball teams.  The next step is the first ballot which will be selected sometime early next month.  We’ll keep an eye out to see if any of our Ozarks athletes make the next step.  Congratulations to all our nominees

2008 Class 5 All-State Football Team

Despite a sub-par year by recent standards, the Ozarks still has good representation on the class 5 all-state team.  Lebanon cashes in on their breakout season by getting 3 first team offense selections.  Record setting QB Ryan Howerton, TE Phillip Archer, and Mizzou signee OL Justin Britt.  Waynesville also garners a trio of selections with BJ Ray on the first team.  Camdenton and Rolla each pick up one selectee.

Sectional football review

Great action last night in the state football sectional round.  The Battle of Barry County Part 2 did not disappoint as Cassville ends their rivals perfect season and title hopes.  Miller and Liberty make statements in defeat.  While Bolivar and Greenfield make their statements in victory.  Webb City looks like the team to beat.  And in class 5, the Ozarks goes 0-2 against the Kansas City area, but 1-0 vs St. Louis.  Still waiting on some information on a couple of games, but here’s what we do know as we move to the quarterfinals.

CLASS 1

Sectional football picks

The sectional round features a few rematches that should be very interesting with Miller @ Thayer, Cassville @ Monett, West Plains @ Farmington, and Neosho @ Webb City.  Even Lee’s Summit West @ Ozark is a rematch from last year’s playoffs.  Miller/Thayer isn’t the only meeting of state ranked team as #10 Liberty travels to #7 Fair Grove.  Bolivar gets to see the Jordan Webb Show as #2 Union comes in to face the Liberators.  It should be cold and it looks like it will be rainy which means crazy things are bound to happen.  My disclaimer?  These predictions are null and void in the event of rain.  You will receive no refunds.  Still, enjoy it all.  I’ll be posting scores as soon as I get back from Monett.
