2/12/09 scores

On a night usually dominated by girls basketball, it was the Hillcrest boys that stole the show upsetting Central at the Pit last night 61-56.  Derek Chaney had 17 to help the Hornets bring Central down to earth after their big win over Rock Bridge Tuesday.  Tied at the end of the third, the Hornets used a 8-1 run to grab the lead for good and take the win over the #1 seed in their district.  Johnny Gray had 19 for Central.

Great action on the girls side also.  I was at the Nixa/Webb City showdown last night.  Webb City was playing their third game in three days and it showed against a Lady Eagle squad that is playing great ball.  Up three at the half, Nixa turned up the defensive pressure coming out of the locker room.  Webb City was able to pull within 1 at 34-33, but a 12-2 run for Nixa opened the game up.  From there, Nixa was content to break the Webb City pressure and live at the foul line finally winning 61-43.  Bethanie Funderburk led Nixa with 19 points.

And in a big Frisco League showdown, state-ranked Laquey held off Richland 71-69 behind 19 points from Emily Murray.

Fair Grove continues to roll despite being 2 players down as they win the big matchup with Skyline 68-54.  The Lady Eagles ran up a 14 point lead at the half.  Then held off a Skyline charge in the third period.  The Lady Tigers closed the gap to 5 going into the final quarter, but Fair Grove outscored them by 9 down the stretch for the final margin.  If any doubters were left, this recent stretch since the injuries in which they’ve beaten both Central and now Skyline should have converted them.

Kickapoo and KC O’Hara advanced to the final of the Nixa Invitational Friday night.  Kickapoo used a big third quarter to turn around a 26-25 halftime deficit and defeat Hillcrest 71-57.  While Nixa just couldn’t completely slow down O’Hara and fell 62-53.

In Rogersville, a pair of 31 point performances resulted in different results as Preston Guiot’s 31 leads Bolivar into the final 57-50 over Rogersville.  But Patrick Holt’s 31 wasn’t enough to offset the absence of Shaun Thomas and Chadwick falls to Lebanon 75-61.

And the Laquey/Stoutland showdown at the Conway tournament gets short-circuited as #3 seed Miller knocked off the second seeded Tigers 53-47.  Top seeded Laquey will be their opponent as the Hornets drop Fair Grove 54-30.

Opposite results for a couple of undefeated girls teams last night.  Couch remains unbeaten by pounding Koshkonong in Thayer tournament 66-16.  But New Covenant drops their first game of the year 46-44 to Reeds Spring in the Galena Lady Bear Classic.

For the game of the night, we go all the way to Iberia where the Richland Bears trailed rival Dixon at the half by 10, 37-27.  But the Bears came out red hot in the second half scoring 65 in the final two quarters to come from behind and win 92-80.

The finish of the night goes to the Lebanon/Rolla contest.  In a low-scoring affair, Lebanon trailed 31-29 until Kylie Dudley hit the only 3-pointer of the night for either team at the buzzer to give the Yellowjackerts the 32-31 win.

And individual performance of the night goes to Houston’s Kyle Poynter who poured in 47 in the Tigers 89-72 win over Naylor in the opening round of the Liberty tournament.

On the hardwood tonight, Sparta, Couch, and Osceola remained unbeaten as Brooke Stevens lead 4 Sparta players in double figures in their 66-45 win over Spokane, the Lady Indians cruised to a 55-24 win over Dora, and Jordan Garrison knocked down 24 points to lead Osceola to a 69-34 win over Butler.  Christian County powers Ozark and Nixa both picked up wins.  75-56 was the score as the Lady Tigers downed Marshfield despite Amanda Gourley’s game high 21 points.  While Nixa eased to a 69-43 victory over Rogersville.

The boys side saw the finals of the Golden City Tournament get set as top seed Dadeville beat Lockwood 71-51.  They will face Everton who pulled out a 55-54 win over Liberal on the strength of Garrett Gladden’s 28 points.

And finally on the wrestling mats, Monett wrestlers Ethan Davis at 135, Kellen Bounous at 145, and Kyle Meyer at 152 all remained unbeaten as the Cubs went to 4-0 in duals this year dropping Carl Junction and Nixa by scores of 62-15 and 66-16.

A number of big boys clashes this evening around the Ozarks.  At Ozark, Branson ran out to a 22 point lead at the end of the first then held off Ozark from their to win 89-79.  Mike Wiebe had 26 and Tate Unruh 24 for the Pirates.  Seth Arnold lead Ozark with 26.  At my favorite gym in the Ozarks, the Pit at Central, the Bulldogs won the showdown with Kickapoo 50-45 despite Alex Hall’s 21 pts.  And in Thayer, the Bobcats win the rematch with previously undefeated Eminence 54-52 to move to 9-2 on the year.

*Update* A huge thank you to fungoking for posting the Lebanon results at MoSports and sending them to me.  You da man!

Here are the other tournaments that I’m aware of and I will make every effort to obtain results.  No promises made of course.  Also, just a gentle reminder that you don’t have to be in Springfield to see some great basketball right now.
