A bittersweet day today as we’ll say good bye to some of the greats in Ozarks basketball. Clever’s Jeremy Dresslaer, Mt. Vernon’s Zack Kleine, and Miller’s Hannah Wilkerson will each play their last high school basketball game today. And though we’ll most likely see them again in college, there’s always something special about the high school days. About playing for town and team. And each one of these three has been huge for all four years. Thanks for the memories Jeremy, Zack, and Hannah. Now go make one more.
Here’s our schedule for today.
- Noon – Class 3 girls 3rd place – Macon (26-5) vs Maryville (25-4)
- 1:40 – Class 3 boys 3rd place – Whitfield (21-11) vs Mt. Vernon (24-8)
- 3:20 – Class 2 girls 3rd place – Canton (25-6) vs Miller (27-5)

Change is in the air as some new faces have a real shot to rise to the top this year. And don’t sleep on the small school. Zach Medley and Brock Toler of Dadeville, Alex Oserowsky of Thomas Jefferson, and Wheatland’s Clay Crouch are all players to catch in action. If your looking for guys who can flat fill up a score sheet, and SCA game should provide you a good chance to see someone go big. Derek Daniels of Mt. View-Liberty, Willow Springs Stephen Mallow, Houston’s Kyle Poynter, and Pete Leonard of Ava should all be among the area scoring leaders. And if you’re looking for great team play, the list is long. Ozark, Nixa, Dadeville, Miller, Seneca, Stoutland, Laquey, Blue Eye, Southwest, Rogersville, Reeds Spring, Greenwood, etc. Star players? Got em. Hot rivalries? Yep. It’s all here this year. Bring it on!

Big win tonight for the Purdy Eagles as they defeat #4 Blue Eye 8-7 in an extra inning thriller. Trailing 4-3 entering the 7th, the Bulldogs David Gilley put Blue Eye on top 6-4 with a three run homer. But Purdy would answer back with authority as Chris Bennett smacked a two run bomb of his own to send the game into extra frames.
Blue Eye once again threatened in the top of the eighth, but a ‘step on third, throw to first’ double play got the Eagles out unscathed and set the stage for the final drama. With the bags full of Eagles in the bottom half, Chris Bennett again stepped to the plate and got his third RBI of the night when he was hit by a pitch to bring home the game winner. Purdy wins 7-6.
For Coach Joshua Hughes and the Eagles, it’s their first win over Blue Eye since the first game of the ’05 fall season. And should set up some high drama if the two squads should happen to meet again in the state quarterfinals. Great game, great win for Purdy, and possibly great motivation for Blue Eye for the rest of the season.

Eminence has already beaten Lesterville twice this year and stud Austin Brewer is now back. After scoring 12 points his first game back, can he get back to near full capacity?
- Eminence
- Lesterville
- Dora
- Bakersfield
- Bradleyville
- Bunker
- Lutie
Prediction: This looks pretty clear cut. Eminence hasn’t needed Brewer to beat Lesterville yet. They do even better with him.

Branson hits the century mark in an easy win tonight. Reeds Spring’s Jake Marty lead all scorers with 30 points. But Mike Wiebe had 24 and Tate Unruh 23 as the Pirates breeze 100-70. Stoutland did them four better though as the Tigers beat Iberia 104-63. Dadeville continues to look impressive as both Brock Toler and Dakota Webb get double doubles in the Bearcats 70-25 win over Walnut Grove. And Joplin gets a buzzer beating 3 from Derek Stokes to down Parkview 39-36.
In the closest game of the night the Hartville Lady Eagles come from 5 down to start the fourth to win 41-39. Maggie Arnall had 20 for Hartville.
And the best individual performance of the night goes to Dietrick Sooter for his 50 point outburst including 11 longballs in the Eagles 82-47 win over Greenfield. Brother Wayne Sooter kicked in 20 points and 3 threes of his own.

Got to catch a great game tonight and one of the better small school players in the area with Pierce City and Dietrick Sooter taking on the Southwest Trojans in Washburn. In a game that was close throughout, the free throw shooting of the Eagles made the difference as Pierce City wins 76-69. For the night, Pierce City was 19 of 24 from the line including 11 of 12 in the second half. Sooter lead 4 players in double figures with 26 including 5 3-pointers. For Southwest, Levi Roberts had 23 and Josh Hartin 21 but it wasn’t enough to keep the Eagles from winning their fourth game in a row in Washburn.
The highlight of big school play came as Hillcrest snapped Kickapoo’s 65 game Ozark Conference win streak dropping them 62-43. The Hornets held Alex Hall to just 5 points on the night and were lead by James Taylor’s 17 point and 14 rebounds. Hillcrest also got 17 from Derek Chaney and 16 from Dorial Green to go to 7-2 on the year.
