2008-09 basketball year in review

Since we’re halfway through baseball season, I thought I’d better do our basketball review before it gets totally lost.  We’ll always remember this as the year of the ladies in the Ozarks as every state championship game features a team from SW Mo.  The Nixa Lady Eagles, Exeter Lady Tigers, and Sparta Lady Trojans each bring home state titles with Sparta running the table at a perfect 31-0.  Joining those three in the Show-Me Showdown finals were the Webb City Lady Cardinals & Skyline Lady Tigers who saw their quest to repeat as champs come up 1 point short.  Columbia was crowded with Ozarks teams.  The Bakersfield, Couch, and Fair Grove girls made the trip.  As did the Chadwick, Laquey, Miller, and Blue Eye boys.  The Blue & Gold was great.  The Tournament of Champions was incredible.  And we were treated to one of the best all around basketball seasons ever.

A couple of explanations before we continue.  This year I’m naming a team & MVP for each class.  I define MVP as the person who has the biggest impact on their team.  In other words, take that player off the team and what is the effect?  Player of the year is based solely on basketball accomplishments regardless of class.  Who did the best relative to their competition.  And game of the year means a game between two Ozarks teams.  So you won’t see Central beating Rock Bridge listed.  With that, here’s some notable moments from the 08-09 basketball season, our All-OzarksSports teams, and a list of seniors that we say ‘Good bye’ and ‘Thank you’ to.

Class 1 final day schedule and preview

BOYS

  • 9 AM – 3rd place – Glasgow (25-6) vs Chadwick (25-5)
    • Chadwick gets their look at possibly the best class 1 player in the state, Glasgow’s Jay Lee.  The 6′ tall Lee averages 29 points per game, shoot over 33% from three, and is explosive to the basket.  Combining his offensive prowess with 6’4″ center Ben Meyer’s inside muscle, and the ‘must be respected’ shooting of Ryan Haskamp & Briar Hoffman makes the Yellowjackets a dangerous team.  Lee almost demands double team attention, and that leads to open looks for the rest of the squad.  Chadwick’s pressure should have some effectiveness.  The question will be can they avoid the foul trouble that plagued them against Newtown, and will they have the legs to keep it up the entire game.

Class 1 semifinal updates

11:18 PM – Whitney Edie carried the load in the first half for Exeter scoring 9 of the Lady Tigers 15 first half points.  But in the second half, Destani Stensrud came alive and complimented Edie’s 8 second half points with 14 of her own as Exeter shot 61% in the half and broke the game open winning going away.  Edie finishes with 17 and Stensrud 16.  Edie adds 13 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 blocks, and 4 steals.   Exeter get Marion County Saturday at 2 PM with a chance to win the first state title in school history.

We’ll be back tomorrow morning with the final day of class 2 action.  And a preview of the class 3 games later in the day.

10:43 PM – What has been a rough day for Ozarks teams comes to a great end as the Exeter Lady Tigers move into the state title game with a 48-30 victory over Jefferson.  The Lady Eagles fought bravely for 2 & 1/2 quarters, but in the end Exeter was just too strong for them.  Final stats in just a bit.

BOYS

  • 6:10PM – Chadwick (25-4) vs Newtown-Harris (28-1)
    • In the Newtown Tigers, Chadwick will see a team as skilled and disciplined as themselves.  They take care of the ball well, have good ball movement, and run 8 players deep.  Those eight players all average over 5 points a game with guard K.J. Cool leading the pack at 18.5.  As their three point shooting goes, so they go. And they usually go very well, with only a loss to Glasgow the only blemish on their record.  They average just over 73 points per game, but their defense is solid.  Only 5 times have they surrendered over 50, and only once has a team broke 80 (Chadwick’s scoring average).  The Cardinals will have to force some turnovers with their pressure defense, continue to get good 3 point shooting from Seth Thomas, and breakdown the Tiger defense.  Today they may find out just how much they miss Shaun Thomas.
