12/15/09 Scores

Caught the Crane/Cassville boys game last night deep in Barry County.  I wanted to get a first hand look at Crane’s high scoring guard Levi Cook, and see how and if the Cassville Wildcats were progressing under new coach TJ Dickenson.  When the dust settled, Crane had themselves a 61-44 victory, Cook had 27 points, and the Wildcats have reason to hope.

The game itself was entertaining. Cassville jumped out to a 7-2 lead only to see Crane reel off a 10-1 run and finish the first quarter up 12-8.  Cassville stayed in the game though not letting Crane pull away until a 12-2 run in the third quarter game them some breathing room.  Cook had 14 points in the first half, and 13 in the second, most of them answering each Cassville attempt to get back in the game. And they wouldn’t as the Pirates outscored them in each quarter to get the win.

And we are fully under way in the 09-10 basketball season.  And Pleasant Hope’s Matt Brown has already marked himself as a player to watch scoring 82 points in the teams first two games.  Last night Brown went for 40 as the Pirates won 85-33 over College Heights in the first round of the Dennis Cornish Invitational in Lockwood.

On the girls side, Everton’s Jessica Holland opened her season with a triple double in the Lady Tigers 64-21 win over Niangua in the Everton Invitational.  Holland had 23 points, 17 rebounds, and 11 steals to help Everton secure the victory.  Teammate Linsey Denney also scored 23 knocking down four 3 pointers.

2009 class 1 volleyball preview

Last year was a fantastic year for class 1 volleyball in the Ozarks.  The state poll was dominated by teams from SW Mo with up to five teams at a time, and seven teams overall making an appearance in the top 10.  Six teams made the state tournament with three advancing to quarterfinals.  The only thing that kept it from being a great year was that Eminence finished runner up instead of champion falling 21-25, 25-22, 25-23 to Sacred Heart.

2009 should be another excellent year.  A number of all-district, all-region, & all-state players return.  And a state title is definitely not out of question.  Here’s the teams & players to watch for.

1/12/09 scores

The game of the night is on the boys side as Mansfield and Fair Grove go four extra periods to settle their contest.  The Lions Nathan Jones scored 23 and hit 7 threes to help Mansfield outlast the Eagles 82 – 77.  It was inside vs outside with Mansfield tossing in 12 threes on the night to Fair Grove’s 1.  But Justin Cleeton and Matt Loyd provided plenty of punch for the Eagles scoring 23 & 24 pts.  Mansfield rallied from 7 down to start the fourth to send the game to bonus basketball.

Miller’s scoring machine Hannah Wilkerson has the top individual performance as she went for 42 points to lead the Lady Cardinals to a 69-63 win over a good Ash Grove squad.  Honorable mention to Thomas Jefferson’s Alex Oserowsky who had the big double double scoring 23 and grabbing 16 rebounds in the Cavaliers 67-64 loss to Southwest.

‘Aw nuts.  Skunked again.’  – Ralphie, A Christmas Story

Sadly, that pretty much wraps up the days activities at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City today.  Only one of the area teams came out on the winning end today as Ash Grove took third place in class 2 in 3 sets over Cole Camp.  The Lady Pirates end the year with a 21-10-5 record.  In the other third place game involving an Ozarks team, Glendale fell to Incarnate Word in 3 sets to finish the season 35-4-1 and fourth in the state.  Kaley Lyons ended her great high school career with 19 kills in the losing effort.
