Week 10 review

It was simply a glorious couple of nights for football.  While I enjoy catching a game indoors, I think football should be played outside.  The elements are part of the game.  And Thursday night was a football cathedral.  Wind & rain.  Mud & muck.  Slipping, sliding, sloshing.  It was beautiful man.  A perfect end to a great regular season.  Yes, some teams lost that wouldn’t have if the weather had cooperated.  But that’s just another nuance that we all love.  Unless it’s your team that loses.

Last year I picked the playoff games and did really freaking good.  But, I’m not doing it again.  I’m going to sit back and enjoy them myself instead of rooting for someone because I picked them.  You’ll still get a preview before each round so you’ll know what to look for.  But I’m shutting down the prediction machine until next year.  I’m done channeling my inner Carnac.  The crystal ball has left the building.

Shed no tears my friends as we say good bye to this year’s last…

The Good

Week 9 review

Some teams rise up when the stakes are high.  Others fall flatter than a Kansas wheat field.  Seeing a team make the transition from one who falls to one who stands strong can be exhilarating.  Watching a team go the other way can be painful beyond all measure.   Friday’s action showed off some of both.  And for many of you, you don’t have to search your memory very much to find those teams who have changed lately.

A couple examples of teams that have changed for the better?  Cassville.  0-10 a few short years ago and a team that won only 1 district title from ’05 to ’07 despite losing only three games during that stretch.  Now, the defending state champs have consecutive wins over excellent teams to win their district title.  How about Lebanon?  After breaking a 14 year losing streak to Camdenton last year, they put a huge crimp in the Lakers playoff fortunes by starting their own winning streak in the series.  I won’t point out teams that have changed for the worse.  I’m sure you can come up with those on your own.

Remember to slow down and savor your next to last helping of…

Week 8 picks

Wow!  I mean wow!  If you look at the state rankings, and remember that we’re in districts now, the Ozarks has the possibility of 4 meetings between state ranked team.  One in class 4 with three teams there, two in class 3 with 4 teams ranked, and one more in class 1 with the three ranked teams there.  That’s the best we could do.  Well guess what, that’s exactly what we’ve got.  Four matchups between state ranked squads tonight. Not only are we gonna have a big time in the Ozarks, we’re gonna shake up the state.  Get ready to go, here’s the…

Week 8 Picks

Game of the Week

  • Monett (7-0) (#1 class 3) at Cassville (6-1) (#5 class 3)
    • Two top 5 teams in class 3, two great rivals, an important district matchup, and all the built up drama from last year.  Let’s face it, this is the game most folks have been looking forward to this year and neither team has disappointed.  After an opening week loss to Branson, the Wildcats retooled defense has been getting better & better.  They haven’t allowed more than 19 points since, and haven’t allowed more than 7 in the last four games.  RB Joseph Gouvion leads the team in scoring.  But like last year, the defense is where it’s at and they’re lead by linebackers Trenton Tanner and Devin Linenbrink.  They’ll need to be sharp to shut down Monett RB Christian Privett, the heart and soul of the Cub offense.  QB Tyler Green needs to find some yards through the air to allow Privett some running room.  Spencer Witt is his favorite target.

Week 7 review

I think it’s safe to say we had the upset of the year this weekend.  I had Greenfield/Lockwood on my ‘Games to keep an eye on’ list, but only thought it would be closer than expected.  Lebanon has found the power switch after a slow start to the season.  They’ll need it going into a district that features undefeated Rolla, a Camdenton team that is lethal when on, and a Waynesville squad that has one two of their last three.  Webb City & Cassville look to be in great form to defend their titles, Mountain Grove may have found the springboard they need to get them to the Dome, and our favorite Eagle continues to soar.  All in this weeks hermetically sealed version of…

9/28/09 Question of the Week Results

The people have spoken and they have said with a clear & ringing voice “CALEB”.

Caleb Schaffitzel of Fair Grove runs away with the voting for first half MVP claiming well over 2 times as many votes as second place Braxton Baker of Webb City.  Schaffitzel with his 18 TDs and 1,025 yards rushing in the first [...]

OS.Net Question of the Week – 9/28/09

As we hit the halfway mark, this weeks question involves who has had the best season so far.  Lot’s of good candidates across the Ozarks.  Touchdown machine Caleb Schaffitzel covers both offense & defense for Fair Grove.  Christian Privett of #1 Monett.  Braxton Baker, one of many strong links for Webb City.  Maybe you like one [...]

Week 5 picks

We’ll be at the halfway point after tonight.  That means the weekly rankings, undefeated list, & winless list will debut this season next week.  Both lists have been shrinking each week & I think the same happens tonight.  At least two winless teams will get their first W as we have two 0-4 matchups.  And I think one of the remaining 4-0 teams will drop a game tonight.  We go to Rolla for our game of the week as the Bulldogs look to move into the class 5 state rankings.  To do so, they’ll have to lay a second straight Ozark Conference loss on Joplin.  Nixa & Webb City battle for the top spot in the COC Large division.  Other teams looking to rebound from their first loss include Mt. View-Liberty against Strafford, Neosho against Carthage, Carl Junction against #1 Monett, Catholic against Marshfield, & Jasper against Liberal.  It’s week 5 baby.  When the contenders step forward, & the pretenders walk away.

Week 4 review

Well, it wasn’t a perfect week like I hoped for, but it wasn’t bad either.  One of those coming totally out of the blue.  Joplin & Camdenton staged a shootout for the ages with Rolla & Parkview not far behind.  Ava & Seneca proved they are teams to watch out for.  Waynesville continued their free fall.  Buffalo put one in the win column.  And someone outscored most teams all by himself.

You’ll find all this and more when you spread sunshine all over the place, and just put on…

The Good

  • Miller (2-1) (#8 class 1) at Jasper (3-0)
    • Prediction: Miller is still beat up, but with their pride on the line, I think they win.
    • Result: Miller 33, Jasper 20.  Tyler Hinshaw was a one man team for the Cardinals.  Rushing for 150 yards & 2 TDs, passing for 66 and a TD, and snagging 2 interceptions.

Week 3 review

As Monty Python sang, always look on the bright side of life.  My picks have been sub-par, but it’s made for some exciting football.  For example, I took Mountain Grove to beat Mt. View-Liberty.  But it was flat out exciting being in the house as the Eagles beat the Panthers for the first time in nearly 20 years.  I picked Nixa to beat Branson, and Rogersville to beat Bolivar.  But how can I feel bad about having a wrong pick when the games were so great.  And I picked Waynesville to beat Parkview, and Lamar to drop Aurora.  But I can’t feel bad about the Vikings and Houn Dawgs getting a win right now.

Yeah.  I’m just rationalizing.  My picks stink so far & I hate it.  On to this weeks calcium fortified version of…

Week 2 picks

It’s a week to get some questions answered.  Such as “Just how good is (Branson, Carthage, Rogersville, Nixa)?”.  Or “Was the win by (Jasper, Cabool, Parkview) a fluke or are they ready for breakout seasons?”.  How about the ever popular “Surely (Camdenton, Hillcrest, Cassville, Ozark) is better than they looked in week one arent’ they?”.  I don’t know if we’ll have all the answers after tonight, but we’ll have more.  Some great games on tap tonight.  Nixa & Carthage clash to see who will be Webb City’s main challenger in the COC Large division.  Speaking of the Cardinals, I’ll be making the journey south of the border to watch them take on the Rogers Mounties while a few blocks over Parkview will be clashing with Heritage.  Thayer & Mountain Grove will be doing battle.  And Rogersville takes the drive down to Branson to take on the Pirates.  Here they are with no preservatives added…
