Alright. Back from vacation & we’re going to catch up on a few things we missed. So prepare for a deluge of posts the next few days.
Jeff Piepenbrink of Jasper was the story on the boys side as he closed out his high school career with 3 state titles to lead Jasper to a second place finish. Piepenbrink accounted for 34 of Jasper’s 39 points as they finished just 3 points back of champion Wellington-Napoleon. New Covenant took third trailing Jasper by only 2 points. The Warriors only won the 4 by 800 relay, but scored a number of other high finishes. Other winners included Wheaton sophomore Bubba Galvan taking the long jump, and Jordan Meadows of Liberal edging Osceola’s Josh Foley by .04 for the state 200 meter dash title.
No state titles on the girls side, but a strong showing by Liberal as they finish fifth, just three points out of third.

4:05 PM – The old adage is ‘defense wins championships’. And Exeter showed that again in the final as they hold Marion County to 23.4% shooting for the game. In addition to forcing 20 turnovers, they got 10 steals, allowed Marion County less than 10 points in each quarter, and expanded the lead throughout the game. Whitney Edie completes her brilliant high school career by scoring 25 points, grabbing 7 rebounds, nabbing 6 steals, and blocking 3 shots. Destani Stensrud scores and Katie Chadd 10 on 5 of 6 shooting as the Lady Tigers put this one to bed early. Exeter took a lead that they would not relinquish at 5:49 of the first period, getting it to double digits for the rest of the game with over four minutes left in the second. Great year for the Lady Tigers as the only blemish comes from the fourth place team in class 2. It’ll be a great ride back to Barry County. Congratulations Lady Tigers, class 1 state champions!
3:25 PM - It’s over in Columbia and the Exeter Lady Tigers make it 3-1 for SW Mo in the girls state finals as they crush Marion County 56-31 to win the first girls basketball state title in school history. Defense did the trick as they forced 20 turnovers and only surrendered 9. Back with details in a bit.

11:18 PM – Whitney Edie carried the load in the first half for Exeter scoring 9 of the Lady Tigers 15 first half points. But in the second half, Destani Stensrud came alive and complimented Edie’s 8 second half points with 14 of her own as Exeter shot 61% in the half and broke the game open winning going away. Edie finishes with 17 and Stensrud 16. Edie adds 13 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 blocks, and 4 steals. Exeter get Marion County Saturday at 2 PM with a chance to win the first state title in school history.
We’ll be back tomorrow morning with the final day of class 2 action. And a preview of the class 3 games later in the day.
10:43 PM – What has been a rough day for Ozarks teams comes to a great end as the Exeter Lady Tigers move into the state title game with a 48-30 victory over Jefferson. The Lady Eagles fought bravely for 2 & 1/2 quarters, but in the end Exeter was just too strong for them. Final stats in just a bit.
