On the boys side of class 2, a repeat of last year as College Heights distance running wasn’t enough to overcome the sprinters of Maplewood as College Heights takes third again. Caleb Hoover takes two firsts (in the 1600 & 3200), a third, and is part of the second place 4 by 800 team to lead the way. Caleb Barnum of Strafford is happy to see Nic Ford of Centralia graduate as Barnum takes three runner up finishes, trailing Ford in each. The Indians finish eighth and Fair Grove takes tenth. And Iberia’s Brian Duncan repeats as the state discus champ.
For the girls, Conway takes third with Dallis Bailey repeating as the 800 meter champion. Stockton joins the Lady Bears in the top 10 with an eighth place finish. And Mt. View-Liberty’s Kylie Cornman improves on her fourth place finish of last year to win the state shot put championship.

Not much success on the boys side of the equation at the class 2 state cross county championships this weekend. No area boys teams finished in the top 5. But Austin Slagle of Ash Grove did represent the Ozarks well finishing fourth in the individual competition.
A totally different story on the girls side as Springfield Catholic finished second overall and East Newton took fourth. Five area girls finished in the top ten individuals lead by Catholic’s Courtney Devlin who took fifth. Her teammate Natalie Smid finished in ninth place. Rounding out the area contingent was Maggie Tennal of Lamar in sixth, Conway’s Brittney Leakey in seventh, and Kelsie Hutsell of Willow Springs in eighth.

College Heights’ running has them high in the first day standings in class 2 boys. Caleb Hoover placed first in the 1600 and fourth in the 800, and Trenton Morris third in the 1600 as College Heights sits second currently. Iberia’s Brian Duncan claimed a state title in discus for the Rangers as they currently sit fifth in the standings.
On the girls side, only Miller finished the first day in the top 10 as Taylor Rivera finished third in the 3200 and Sam Hendrickson eighth in the discus.

3:55 PM – Sparta brings it home. Sparta 56, Canton 49. The scoring was cranked up in the second half as Canton’s Tori Niemann, who set out most of the first half with two fouls, scored 18 points to finish with 21. But Sparta was equal to task as they built their lead to as much as 15 in the third period. Brooke Stevens goes for 19, Kayla Coffer 16, and Tashina Tennis 11 as the Lady Trojans complete the perfect season and win their first state championship! Sparta leaves no question about who is #1 in class three as they down the #3, #4, & #6 teams from the final poll on their way to the title.
The Ozarks now sit 2-1 in girls state title games this year. Fair Grove and Skyline will play for their shot this evening. And Exeter will play for the title tomorrow. Congratulations Sparta Lady Trojans! Undefeated state champions!
2:50 PM – Halftime and Sparta holds the lead over Canton 21-16. The low scoring favors Canton, but Sparta has to like where they stand as they start the second half. Brooke Stevens and Kayla Coffer each have 9 points.
1:50 PM – We’ll be tipping off shortly, and Sparta will be hoping to bring home the second girls state championship of the year for the Ozarks. For 2009, we’ve had a girls team from the Ozarks in every title game. A Fair Grove win later today gets an area rep in all five classes. So far it’s been a rough weekend for area teams as only Exeter has beaten a team from outside SW Mo. Sparta with everything on the line starting shortly.

BOYS
3rd place: 9 AM – Miller (24-5) vs Laquey (28-3)
We know these guys. In fact we’ve seen this game already this year. Laquey rallied from behind to defeat Miller to win the championship of the Conway Tournament. Laquey was short handed for that game. But won’t be this time. Should be another great game.

2:15 PM – Sparta doesn’t let it stay close, comes out firing in the third period hitting 5 3s to push the lead to as much as 19, then maintained the rest of the way to win 59-38 over Couch. Kayla Coffer gets 21 and Brooke Stevens 17 for the Lady Trojans. Sparta shot 63.2% from the field in the second half including 5 of 10 threes. They also held a 27-18 rebounding advantage but it was the hot shooting that turned the tide. Just an explosion as they hit 3 bombs and had an 11-0 run coming out of the locker room. Couch didn’t get their first second half bucket until under 4 minutes left in the third and they couldn’t recover. Whitney Mills lead Couch with 12 points and they head to the 3rd place game at 10:40 AM tomorrow. Sparta will be waiting for the winner of Canton/New Franklin in the 2 PM championship.
1:25 PM – Halftime of a slugfest in Columbia. Sparta leads by a field goal 16-13 over Couch. If I’m Sparta coach Jerry Songer, I’m not liking that score. Couch is reluctant to press, but when they do it is impressive to behold. If it stays close into the fourth, look for Couch to make a run.

Here’s what on tap today with the four class 2 teams from the Ozarks in action this morning.
BOYS
9 AM – Portageville (22-5) vs Miller (24-4)
The Bulldogs features a starting lineup that are all 6 foot or taller. But the tallest is only 6’4″ so they won’t have a great height advantage. They’re also not know as [...]

I’m finally recovered from my lovely tour of Ozarks gyms and starting to feel myself again. Just in time for tonight’s action in classes 2 & 3. We started the night with the possibility of three Ozarks teams advancing to Columbia in both class 2 boys & girls. That’s already been rendered impossible as Thayer falls to Portageville 59-39. But Laquey moves on by beating Sacred Heart 65-41 and Miller defeats Clever 54-40. In class 3, Skyline falls to Lee’s Summit Christian 54-40. While Liberty takes state #2 Linn to overtime before falling 66-64. And Blue Eye eliminates Seneca 57-40.
The dream of three in the class 2 girls final four remains very much alive though. Laquey routs 26-1 Sacred Heart 50-31. Undefeated Sparta defeats Miller 75-68. Couch’s tough late season schedule seems to have paid off with a 60-45 win over Portageville. And Osceola defeats a good North Platte squad 70-60. In class 3, #1 Fair Grove looks every bit the part almost doubling up Seneca 65-33. Skyline remains alive in their quest for back-to-back state titles, downing Holden 49-47. Only Licking is eliminated by a very good Hermann team 70-55.
