Not much success on the boys side of the equation at the class 2 state cross county championships this weekend. No area boys teams finished in the top 5. But Austin Slagle of Ash Grove did represent the Ozarks well finishing fourth in the individual competition.
A totally different story on the girls side as Springfield Catholic finished second overall and East Newton took fourth. Five area girls finished in the top ten individuals lead by Catholic’s Courtney Devlin who took fifth. Her teammate Natalie Smid finished in ninth place. Rounding out the area contingent was Maggie Tennal of Lamar in sixth, Conway’s Brittney Leakey in seventh, and Kelsie Hutsell of Willow Springs in eighth.

Don’t look now, but Iberia is starting to round into shape. Although they’ve still had a decent year, it hasn’t been exactly what they expected. But with top pitcher Dustin Ewers starting to throw again, the Rangers are beginning to look like the powerhouse we thought they would be. Versailles is the latest victim as they fall 11-1 in 5 innings. Garth Minnick gets the win and goes to 4-1 on the season. Trey Baumgardner gets his fifth homer of the year and Austin Brown his second. As for Ewers, so far in 2 innings pitched he’s struck out 5 and allowed 2 hits with no runs. If you’re coach Jason Morris, you have to feel good about where they’re at right now.
On the soccer pitch, Glendale won a great matchup with Rolla last night as freshman Molly Brewer struck the golden goal in the first overtime to give the Lady Falcons a 1-0 win.

Got to take in a matchup of two of the areas top pitchers tonight. Catholic’s Joel Harrington and Monett’s Kyle Coatney. The Irish traveled to Barry County to take on their district opponent on their home field. From the outset Harrington appeared just a little bit off, seeming like he couldn’t quite get comfortable. While Coatney was strong from the beginning, hitting his spots as usual when he’s on.
Kyle Coatney deals as third basemen Kirk Moore waits.
After a scoreless first, Monett drew first blood as catcher Preston Thompson went deep to left with a solo shot. The left hand hitting Thompson got good contact, hit the ball high, and with the wind blowing out to left, it was more than enough to put the Cubs up 1-0. That’s how it would stand until the sixth. Despite his struggles, Harrington continued to battle and even dazzled at times. The homer was the only tally for Monett until Jake Smith drove in 2 runs with a bases loaded single in the bottom of the sixth.
That would turn out to be all Monett needed as Coatney took care of the rest, holding Catholic without a hit until the top of the seventh and finishing with a one hit, 3-0 shutout. Thompson was the hitting star going 3 for 3 adding 2 singles to his home run. Harrington goes the distance for Catholic and pitches well enough to win, but the Irish just can’t overcome a great performance from Coatney today. Round one goes to Monett. But don’t be surprised if we see these two matching up in districts at the end of the season.
