CLASS 4
At Hammons Student Center, Springfield
- Girls – Webb City 57, St. James 36
- Last year, the key to beating Webb City was to beat their press and stop Kaitlin Jaeger. But as Webb City displayed Saturday against St. James, even if you do hold Jaeger down this year, you’re still likely to get smoked. Balanced scoring and speed by the bucketful carried the Lady Cardinals to the win at HSC. St. James hung around early but a 17-2 Webb run gave them an 18 point lead in the second quarter. St. James used solid free throw shooting to stay close, and pulled within 6 in the third before a 12-4 run by the Lady Cardinals keyed by a Kyndal Clark 3 pointer removed any more suspense. The headline matchup of the night goes to the Webb City Lady Cardinals as the defeat Nixa 61-46 in the showdown of state ranked squads. Hailey Roderique lead the way in scoring with 21 points for Webb City. Kaitlin Jaeger registered a double double with 15 points, 11 rebounds, and blocked 6 shots.
And I attended a strong ‘Game of the Year’ candidate as the Richland Bears welcomed Frisco League rival Licking in for Homecoming. The Wildcat’s Ben Denbow registered a double double with 25 points and 10 rebounds while Josh Hood scored 28. Richland countered with guard Pat Poston scoring 38, but it was Jacob Shelton’s jumper from the wing as the buzzer sounded that game the Bears a 91-90 win.

What a day yesterday. Four games at the Blue and Gold. Then the KTXR Lady Classic first round with Webb City’s 65-62 overtime win over Midwest City capping off a tremendous day. Here’s a few thoughts from each game before we get to the scores.
Blue and Gold
- Nixa 69, Willard 59 – Nixa is deep, talented, disciplined, well-coached. The only thing that keeps me from saying they are a serious state-title contender is the lack of go to player. But I could very easily see freshman Jalen Norman becoming just that type of player by the end of the year. Continue reading 2009 Holiday Tournament Week – Day 2

Clever & Miller watch as Jeremy Dresslaer hits two of his 30 points
Saw a great early season game tonight in Miller as the Cardinals took on Clever. Clever was fresh off a championship in their own tournament while it was the first game of the season for Miller. The Cardinals jumped out to an 11-7 lead midway through the first period as Justin Jack hit two early 3-pointers. From there, Clever went on a 14-0 that extended into the second period. But now down 21-11, Miller responded with their own 8-0 run to get back in the game and they went to halftime with Clever leading 23-21. Miller had to feel good being down only 2 as they shot an abysmal 6 of 27 from the field in the first half.

And we are fully under way in the 09-10 basketball season. And Pleasant Hope’s Matt Brown has already marked himself as a player to watch scoring 82 points in the teams first two games. Last night Brown went for 40 as the Pirates won 85-33 over College Heights in the first round of the Dennis Cornish Invitational in Lockwood.
On the girls side, Everton’s Jessica Holland opened her season with a triple double in the Lady Tigers 64-21 win over Niangua in the Everton Invitational. Holland had 23 points, 17 rebounds, and 11 steals to help Everton secure the victory. Teammate Linsey Denney also scored 23 knocking down four 3 pointers.

The Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association announced their academic all-state teams yesterday. And a number of area athletes were honored. But in the team category, El Dorado Springs took the award in class 3 with a 3.68 GPA after finishing second in class 2 last year. Carl Junction finished fourth and Forsyth eighth. Webb City finished second in class 4 with Lebanon tenth. And in class 2, Spokane finished fifth.
A trio of players repeated on the team from last year. Dalton Kelley of Bolivar, and Forsyth’s Stephen Holland and Byron Richardson all in class 3 made another appearance. Holland & Richardson were part of the biggest contingent from the Ozarks as Forsyth had 4 players selected. Spokane, El Dorado Springs, & Webb City each placed two players on the list.
As always, congrats to all the honorees for being true scholar-athletes.

A big Saturday of tournament finals yesterday. In the Osceola girls tournament, a battle of state ranked teams went to class 1 Montrose as they handed the Lady Indians their first regular season loss since November of ’06 45-35. Kendall Hart lead the Blue Jays with 20 to take the title. Also on the girls side, Lebanon wins the Clinton tournament in a low-scoring affair 32-23 over Holden.
The boys side saw four close finals as Kickapoo got a late layup to beat KC O’Hara 54-52 to win the Nixa Invitational. Laquey’s Kortez Britt hit 4 free throws down the stretch to help the Hornets win the Conway tournament 40-37 over Miller. Bolivar needed almost every one of Preston Guiot’s 28 points and Dalton Kelley’s 26 to claim the Rogersville tournament championship 61-57 over Lebanon. And Macks Creek’s Curtis Collins hit a 3 at the buzzer to give the Pirates the Osceola boys tournament title over Weaubleau 47-45.
