2010 Big 8 Football Predictions

Cassville took their second straight state title, and Lamar was one step away from their first.  Both teams return quite a bit of talent while three new coaches take over at Monett, East Newton, and Carl Junction.

The Wildcats could be forgiven if they overlooked someone and dropped a couple of games.  With Mountain Grove and Branson on the non-conference schedule, it would be easy.  Continue reading 2010 Big 8 Football Predictions

The 2009 Missouri Football Coaches Association All-State Teams have been announced and class 3 is dominated by Ozarks squads.  Cassville leads the way with 6 first team, 2 second team, and 2 third team selections.  And Coach David Large repeated as class 3 coach of the year.  Rogersville grabbed 4 picks overall including class 3 defensive MVP Conner Smith.

Thayer lead the way in class 1 with 6 picks overall headlined by first team picks Josh Huckabee at running back and Eli Martin on the offensive line.  Miller had 3 players recognized.

While in class 2, Lamar’s playoff run helped them net 4 all state selections.  And Fair Grove’s Caleb Schaffitzel was deservedly recognized as class 2 offensive MVP.

Class 3 Show-Me Bowl Review & Analysis

Many times at the end of the season, the team that ends up #1 has people question them.  Usually by using ‘IFs’.  For example, statements like this were made about last Cassville state title run last year.  IF they hadn’t changed the playoff system, they wouldn’t have even made it.  IF Harrisonville was still in class 3 they wouldn’t have won.  IF Chillicothe hadn’t missed that extra point, they would have won instead.  Some people might say that IF Centrailia hadn’t lost to Brentwood, they would have beat Maryville in the championship.  Sometimes the ‘IFs’ are true statements, but they’ alsore in the past and can’t be changed.  But to some people, they will always leave a question mark on a teams accomplishments.

Week 6 picks

A super week of action this week.  Huge matchups with Mountain Grove traveling to Bolivar, Greenfield going to Jasper, and Branson taking on Carthage.  Huge conference games with Salem at Mt. View-Liberty, Neosho at Webb City, Pierce City at Miller, Hillcrest at Lebanon, and Camdenton at Nixa.  And the huge district gets underway with class 5 district 7 action between Ozark and Parkview, and Kickapoo and Glendale.

No jokes this week folks.  Here’s the…

Week 6 Picks

Game of the Week

  • Mountain Grove (4-1) (#8 class 3) at Bolivar (5-0) (#3 class 4)
    • On the surface, this appears to be a matchup of offensive powers.  The Panthers average just over 30 ppg, while Bolivar goes for over 40.  The names are on the offensive side.  Evan Williams and Chris Mathews for Mountain Grove.  Josh Moffett, Alex Talley, and Kolton Peavy for Bolivar.  And it may ultimately be.  If neither defense asserts itself, this could be a shootout.  Bolivar is so balanced run to pass that no defense can key on any one area.  The Panthers have shown they can take charge of the ground and run all day.  But I think it’s more likely that one of the defenses does take control and generates a substantial second half lead for their team.  But who?  Mountain Grove is yielding just over 10 ppg and has two straight shutouts.  But gave up 36 to the best passing team they’ve seen so far, Mt. View-Liberty.  Bolivar’s D is averaging just over 14 ppg and seems to be improving.  But gave up an inexplicable 28 to Republic earlier this year.
