2010 COC Large Football Predictions

Forget about the conference title, the big question is can any one put an end to Webb City’s regular season winning streak?  There are some challengers, but will they break the string or get strung up?

My choice is strung up.  With Scott Roderique and Christian Hoffman returning at linebacker, the Cardinals will be tough to score on.  Continue reading 2010 COC Large Football Predictions

2010 OzarksSports.Net Football Preview

Schools are starting back up again, jamborees are tonight, and temperatures are still in the 90s.  Ah, football season in the Ozarks.  And so here begins the flood of football information over the next week.  Today is the preview with my entirely meaningless yet so much fun preseason rankings, week to week games to watch and why, and the players to go see.  Next will come my conference by conference previews & predictions.  And we’ll finish up with my entirely fearless predictions on who advances to the playoffs.  With that, away we go.

Sectional Football Preview

Monday night is rematch night.  Seven of the ten games feature teams playing each other for the second time this year.  Six of those being replays of district games.  Two of the remaining three are repeats of games from last year.  Some things are quite different, some are exactly the same.  Here’s what to look for.

CLASS 1

  • Miller (9-2) at Thayer (9-1)
    • The big question here is did Lockwood find a chink in Thayer’s armor with the passing game?  Or was it just one of those nights?  In week 8 Thayer brought the heat on Miller QB Justin Jack in his first game back & battered him on their way to a 54-14 trouncing of the Cardinals.  As usual, the Bobcats found major yards on the ground rushing for almost 500 yards.  Miller has changed up their defense since then with good results, but can they shut down that Thayer rushing attack?  Before you answer, consider this.  Last year’s district game between these two at Miller, Thayer wins 43-7.  When they met in the second round at Thayer, the Bobcats won but only by a score of 28-21.

Regional football review

It was almost a perfect night to be an eagle on the gridiron.  4 out of 5 Eagle teams playing won including Pierce City knocking off undefeated Warsaw.  Fair Grove, Mt. View-Liberty, and Nixa also soared to wins.  Only Jasper falls from the feathered football ranks.

Enough with the bird puns.  A great night of football for Ozarks teams.  Some last minute finishes, huge performances, a big upset, 11 teams say goodbye to another football season, and 19 are still alive.

CLASS 1

  • Thayer 36, Lockwood 21
    • This game was 22-21 with just over 4 minutes left and would have been tied but for a missed Lockwood XP.  But a score, an interception, and another TD secured the win.  Cameron Carey was the wrecking ball for the Bobcats rushing for 232 yards and three TDs.  Josh Huckabee added 100+ rushing yards also.  Reports put Lockwood QB Blake Abbiatti at over 350 yards passing.  I’ll update this when I can verify.

Week 7 picks

Last week before everyone gets into districts, and it’s going to be sloppy out there for a lot of teams. How will that affect things?  Conventional wisdom says whoever can run the ball will win.  But conventional wisdom also says always double down when you have 11.  But in reality, if you’re playing with the rule that the dealer always stands on 17 (including soft hands, such as an Ace and a six), then double down on a 10 or 11 when the dealer’s up card is less than your total. If you’re playing a dealer who hits on hard 17′s, then also double down your 11 vs. a dealer’s Ace.  The point is, conventional wisdom is mostly, but not always right.  And specific circumstances can turn conventional wisdom into a hockey puck.  In this case, we’re talking about football which can really play havoc with conventional wisdom.

That being said, I confidently predict a fine week of picks.  Which, according to my paragraph up above, means I’ll be reeling in shock at about 9:45 PM.  But by then we should also have a much clearer picture of the title chases in the COC Large, SCA, SRVC, & WEMO.  I don’t know if the pinball machine will still be plugged in from last weeks score fest, but there looks to be a couple of high scorers again tonight.  So sit back & enjoy.  And while you do, read what I think all about it in the ….

Game of the Week

Week 6 picks

A super week of action this week.  Huge matchups with Mountain Grove traveling to Bolivar, Greenfield going to Jasper, and Branson taking on Carthage.  Huge conference games with Salem at Mt. View-Liberty, Neosho at Webb City, Pierce City at Miller, Hillcrest at Lebanon, and Camdenton at Nixa.  And the huge district gets underway with class 5 district 7 action between Ozark and Parkview, and Kickapoo and Glendale.

No jokes this week folks.  Here’s the…

Week 6 Picks

Game of the Week

  • Mountain Grove (4-1) (#8 class 3) at Bolivar (5-0) (#3 class 4)
    • On the surface, this appears to be a matchup of offensive powers.  The Panthers average just over 30 ppg, while Bolivar goes for over 40.  The names are on the offensive side.  Evan Williams and Chris Mathews for Mountain Grove.  Josh Moffett, Alex Talley, and Kolton Peavy for Bolivar.  And it may ultimately be.  If neither defense asserts itself, this could be a shootout.  Bolivar is so balanced run to pass that no defense can key on any one area.  The Panthers have shown they can take charge of the ground and run all day.  But I think it’s more likely that one of the defenses does take control and generates a substantial second half lead for their team.  But who?  Mountain Grove is yielding just over 10 ppg and has two straight shutouts.  But gave up 36 to the best passing team they’ve seen so far, Mt. View-Liberty.  Bolivar’s D is averaging just over 14 ppg and seems to be improving.  But gave up an inexplicable 28 to Republic earlier this year.

A dab of this, a pinch of that…

A veritable cornucopia of athletic treats today.  From baseball to soccer to tennis to golf.  Spring brings out the athlete in almost everyone.  The performer of the day is Walnut Grove’s Derrick Morris who had 15 Ks while also belting 3 doubles in a losing effort against Wheatland.  On the ladies side, we’ll tab Bolivar’s Jonna [...]
