Kickapoo’s Danny Thater and Hillcrest’s Doriel Green both had big days at the class 4 championships. Thater took home the 1600 meter championship, and finished second in the 3200. Green’s amazing year continued with a pair of state titles, in the triple jump & 100 meter dash, and a second place finish in the long jump placing Hillcrest sixth in the final standings.
No title materialized from a talents group on the girls side. Liz Reida of Kickapoo, Jessica Jackson of Neosho, and Ekate Lymon of Waynesville each grabbed all-state honors in two events and each should be back again next year. Also placing in two events was Ashlie Shimmin of Joplin who finished third in the shot put and fourth in the discus. Those, combined with second place finishes from Emilee Dailey in the high jump and MacKenzee Roberts in the pole vault propelled the Lady Eagles to a surprising top 10 finish as they placed eighth.

Another fantastic year of Ozarks hoops. Three state titles courtesy of the Hillcrest boys, and Webb City and Mt. Vernon girls. Tons of teams in the state rankings all year. We saw Hannah Wilkerson run down the all time high school scoring mark, then make a run to Columbia. We witnessed possibly the national high school boys basketball highlight of the year when Trey Starks launched himself into the rafters of Mizzou arena and over Oakville’s Garrett Reeg. We prayed as Stephanie Phillips stopped coaching to renew her fight against cancer. And we rejoiced as she came back to guide her team to the final four. We followed the rise of newcomers to the state rankings. Verona and Richland on the girls side. Thomas Jefferson and Gainesville on the boys. We cheered all the buzzer beaters, big wins, great plays, comebacks, defensive stands, hustle plays, razzle dazzle, and gutsy losses. And now, like always, we say goodbye to those seniors who gave everything they had for their schools, for their towns, and for us, and leave us with so many memories. Here’s the year in review.

The Ozarks is represented well on the 2010 Missouri Basketball Coaches Association all-state teams. 15 players were selected from 12 different teams. Dadeville, Clever, and Hillcrest each had two players selected. 3 sophomores were picked including Jacob Pardo of Dora, Riley Jenkins of Norwood, and Doriel Green of Hillcrest. They complemented 8 seniors and 5 juniors. And Hillcrest’s John Schaefer was selected as the class 5 coach of the year. Congratulations to everyone picked.

And big shout out and thank you to Jack Hittinger at the Waynesville Daily Guide for getting this to me. State champion Hillcrest sweeps the boys all-conference awards in the Ozark Conference. The Hornets Doriel Green is named player of the year. And coach John Schaefer claims coach of the year. And on the girls side, Kickapoo’s Casey Carroll and Megan Deines of Glendale share player of the year honors.

Since I was running all over the country Saturday and could only Twitter updates, here’s the wrapup on the final day of Show-Me Showdown I for 2010.
We got a good omen right off the bat as O’Hara, who Webb City defeated in the semifinals, won the class 4 girls 3rd place game 40-37 over St. Dominic.
Next came Republic in the class 4 boys 3rd place game against Soldan out of St. Louis. The first half couldn’t have gone much better as Kevin Stander scored 9, Jonathan Combs 7, and Republic lead by as many as 13 in route to a 29-23 halftime lead. But Soldan opened the second half with an 11-3 run to grab their first lead of the day. Republic fought back and regained a lead they would hold until midway through the fourth quarter on a pair of Nick Yocum free throws. Continue reading Show-Me Showdown I Wrapup

4:10 – We’re one hour away from the tipoff of Kickapoo vs Blue Springs on the girls side. The Hillcrest boys will take on Park Hill South at 8:30. We’ll have updates throughout the night right here. The first girls semifinal is under way with nationally ranked Incarnate Word with a 14 point lead over Ft. Zumwalt West midway through the third period. This will be the fourth time in the last 20 years that the Ozarks has had both a boys and girls team in the final four of both of the biggest classes. In 2005, Kickapoo sent both boys and girls on the class 5 side, with the Willard boys and Ozark girls in class 4. Both of the girls teams won state titles. Ozarks teams brought home three state titles in 2003 with the Kickapoo and Ozark boys, and Kickapoo girls getting the hardware. And in 1990, the Marshfield girls won the only championship for SW Mo. What will be this year? We shall see, but it starts in less than an hour.

CLASS 4
At Hammons Student Center, Springfield
- Girls – Webb City 57, St. James 36
- Last year, the key to beating Webb City was to beat their press and stop Kaitlin Jaeger. But as Webb City displayed Saturday against St. James, even if you do hold Jaeger down this year, you’re still likely to get smoked. Balanced scoring and speed by the bucketful carried the Lady Cardinals to the win at HSC. St. James hung around early but a 17-2 Webb run gave them an 18 point lead in the second quarter. St. James used solid free throw shooting to stay close, and pulled within 6 in the third before a 12-4 run by the Lady Cardinals keyed by a Kyndal Clark 3 pointer removed any more suspense.
