Some baseball is back on tonight and we’ve already had a great game.  A couple of small school titans meet in Dadeville & Stockton with the Tigers coming out on top.  Robbe Ewing used his arm and bat to lead the way, hitting a HR as well as getting the win while striking out 13 Bearcats.  Keaton Seibenaler also hits a dinger to give Stockton a big win.

Elsewhere, Ozark wins a close one over Glendale 3-2 as Drew Crain pitches a complete game for the win.  Strafford’s Conner Wilson smacks a home run and 5 Indian players get 2 hits each as Strafford pulls out an 8-7 win over Forsyth.  And Tyler Burgess continues to impress for Webb City as he gets the W against Kickapoo 9-1.  Derrick Mann helped the Webb City cause with an early grand slam, one of three homers on the night for the Cardinals.

And in soccer last night, Parkview wrapped up their first ever Ozark Conference championship with a 3-0 win over West Plains.  The Lady Vikings will head into districts with a perfect 9-0 conference run in their pocket.

Big showdown in the SRVC last night as Liberal and Jasper clashed with the conference lead on the line Tuesday night.   Liberal came in undefeated in the conference and with only one loss on the season.  Liberal had suffered a loss to Greenfield in SRVC play earlier in the season.  But at the end of the night, both teams left with a conference loss as Jasper upended Liberal 7-3.

A big moment for Glendale soccer coach Jeff Rogers last night as the Lady Falcons 10-0 win over Hillcrest was the 600th victory of his career.  Ole at Springfield Soccer has a nice writeup with some details on the coach’s accomplishments.  Congrats to Coach Rogers and we’re looking forward to #700.

And in Rolla, senior goalkeeper Adrian Pogue recorded her 6th consecutive shutout in the Lady Bulldogs 2-0 win over Lebanon putting her two shy of the state record.  Her next chance to extend her streak is Thursday against Joplin.

Sectional Football Preview

Monday night is rematch night.  Seven of the ten games feature teams playing each other for the second time this year.  Six of those being replays of district games.  Two of the remaining three are repeats of games from last year.  Some things are quite different, some are exactly the same.  Here’s what to look for.

CLASS 1

  • Miller (9-2) at Thayer (9-1)
    • The big question here is did Lockwood find a chink in Thayer’s armor with the passing game?  Or was it just one of those nights?  In week 8 Thayer brought the heat on Miller QB Justin Jack in his first game back & battered him on their way to a 54-14 trouncing of the Cardinals.  As usual, the Bobcats found major yards on the ground rushing for almost 500 yards.  Miller has changed up their defense since then with good results, but can they shut down that Thayer rushing attack?  Before you answer, consider this.  Last year’s district game between these two at Miller, Thayer wins 43-7.  When they met in the second round at Thayer, the Bobcats won but only by a score of 28-21.

Big win tonight for the Purdy Eagles as they defeat #4 Blue Eye 8-7 in an extra inning thriller.  Trailing 4-3 entering the 7th, the Bulldogs David Gilley put Blue Eye on top 6-4 with a three run homer.  But Purdy would answer back with authority as Chris Bennett smacked a two run bomb of his own to send the game into extra frames.

Blue Eye once again threatened in the top of the eighth, but a ‘step on third, throw to first’ double play got the Eagles out unscathed and set the stage for the final drama.  With the bags full of Eagles in the bottom half, Chris Bennett again stepped to the plate and got his third RBI of the night when he was hit by a pitch to bring home the game winner.  Purdy wins 7-6.

For Coach Joshua Hughes and the Eagles, it’s their first win over Blue Eye since the first game of the ’05 fall season.  And should set up some high drama if the two squads should happen to meet again in the state quarterfinals.  Great game, great win for Purdy, and possibly great motivation for Blue Eye for the rest of the season.
