And big shout out and thank you to Jack Hittinger at the Waynesville Daily Guide for getting this to me. State champion Hillcrest sweeps the boys all-conference awards in the Ozark Conference. The Hornets Doriel Green is named player of the year. And coach John Schaefer claims coach of the year. And on the girls side, Kickapoo’s Casey Carroll and Megan Deines of Glendale share player of the year honors.

Cole Denton also has a huge game with 23 points and 17 boards for the Lions.

A couple of rivalry games went different directions last night. Mt. Vernon cruised past Aurora 56-29. The Lady Mountaineers jumped out to a 26-9 halftime lead and added to that as they went along to get the Big 8 victory. While Kickapoo took control of the Ozark Conference race with a 55-50 overtime win over Glendale. Casey Carroll had 20 to lead the Lady Chiefs.
The Mid-Lakes girls race stayed wild as Lauren McCurry’s 28 points helped Pleasant Hope get past Fair Grove 49-48. Webb City continued their roll with a 60-53 win over Ozark behind Kaitlin Jaeger’s 24 points. And the big performance of the night goes to Carl Junction’s Lauren McRae who scored 34 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Lady Bulldogs 66-34 win over Lamar.

There are pluses & minuses to being an amateur running a sports website without an editor. Minuses include not being able to get to everything I want, having a real job, and having my excellent readers correct me when my research, information, or spelling is shoddy. The pluses include me being able to do pretty much whatever I please. For example…
I started out this week’s QotW asking who you thought was the girls Holiday Tournament MVP. I picked players from 1st or 2nd place teams that had great performances. I included Mt. Vernon’s do everything Kenzie Williams who lead them to a Pink & White championship, Hannah Wilkerson of Walnut Grove Classic champions Miller, Lauren McCurry of Pleasant Hope who was the leading scorer at Lebanon, sparkplug Erin Gavin of the Neosho Holiday Classic champion Fair Grove Lady Eagles, Makenzie Smith who helped Kickapoo take second at the KTXR Lady Classic, and Dallis Bailey of Lebanon champions Conway. Not a bad group eh?

Other champions crowned already tonight. Branson wins the Blue division 66-51 over Nixa. Mt. Vernon wins the Pink & White beating West Plains 49-29. And Norwood defeats Dora to win the Cabool Tournament. The Walnut Grove boys championship, the Richland title game, and the U.S. Bank final are all under way with the Gold division game soon to tip.
Webb City is the only area team to find the winners circle on the final day of the KTXR Lady Classic. The Lady Cardinals rebounded from their loss to Kickapoo to blast Lexington Catholic 62-26 in the 3rd place game. Glendale lost a heartbreaking 7th place game 53-52 to Shawnee Mission East. Nixa almost upended Midwest City in the 5th place game. But two Richa Jackson free throws sealed the win for the Bombers 52-50. And in a game just completed, Wheeling, IL hangs on to win 50-44 over Kickapoo. The Lady Chiefs were down 13 at the half but whittled the lead down until they were down 5 with 2 and a half minutes to play. But couldn’t get any closer. Great effort from Kickapoo and a deserved second place finish.

What a day yesterday. Four games at the Blue and Gold. Then the KTXR Lady Classic first round with Webb City’s 65-62 overtime win over Midwest City capping off a tremendous day. Here’s a few thoughts from each game before we get to the scores.
Blue and Gold
- Nixa 69, Willard 59 – Nixa is deep, talented, disciplined, well-coached. The only thing that keeps me from saying they are a serious state-title contender is the lack of go to player. But I could very easily see freshman Jalen Norman becoming just that type of player by the end of the year. Continue reading 2009 Holiday Tournament Week – Day 2

A very interesting evening of girls basketball last night. Conway already had a couple of good wins on the year. Now they’ve added a great win as they knocked off Fair Grove 47-44. Parkview continues to impress as they win over MacDonald County 73-52 behind Emily Akin’s 25 points. New Covenant’s Charlotte Vernier had the big scoring performance of the night netting 41 as the Lady Warriors downed Niangua 68-33. But it’s Morrisville’s Kasey Painter that had the best game of the evening. She registered a triple double of 20 points, 15 assists, and 13 steals as they defeated Everton 83-49.
