Prospect update – Garrett Gladden

Updating one of our prospect profiles, I’m happy to announce that Everton senior Garrett Gladden has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for Central Methodist University in Fayette, MO.  Garrett completed a very successful four year career at Everton in both basketball and track & field.  Pictured below with Garrett is coach Jim Scott.  [...]

Class 1 track & field state meet day 2

Not much in the way of team results from Saturday’s class 1 state track & field meet.  Only one top 10 finish on both the boys & girls side.  Both the Liberal girls and New Covenant boys finished in sixth place overall.  But some exciting individual event titles highlighted by New Covenent’s boys 4 X 400 relay team of Daniel Baird, Luke Letsinger, Jeremy Weimer, and Caleb Scott.  The boys discus was a strong event for the Ozarks with three of the top five finishers calling SW Mo home.  Including state champion Merrit Crawford of Osceola, runner-up Donnie Smith of Crocker, and fifth place Garrett Gladden of Everton.

On the girls side a pair of sophomores claimed state titles.  Halfway’s Olivia Francka completed a good weekend by winning the 1600, and Sonya Kilongkilong (my favorite name in the Ozarks) of McAuley won the 400.

Class 1 track & field state meet day 1

Olivia Francka of Halfway claims the first state title for the Ozarks yesterday as she won the 3200 yesterday.  Her finish puts Halfway in the top 10 team standings at seventh.  Liberal shares eighth place with four other teams as Kylie Brown took fourth in the 3200 and their 4X800 relay team took eighth.

On the boys side, New Covenant is a strong second in the early team results trailing only Princeton.  Luke Letsinger took third in both the 800 and 1600, and Jeremy Weimer grabbed second in the high jump for the Warriors.  The only other area team in the top 10 is Everton, tied for seventh on Garrett Gladden’s second place shot put finish.

2008-09 basketball year in review

Since we’re halfway through baseball season, I thought I’d better do our basketball review before it gets totally lost.  We’ll always remember this as the year of the ladies in the Ozarks as every state championship game features a team from SW Mo.  The Nixa Lady Eagles, Exeter Lady Tigers, and Sparta Lady Trojans each bring home state titles with Sparta running the table at a perfect 31-0.  Joining those three in the Show-Me Showdown finals were the Webb City Lady Cardinals & Skyline Lady Tigers who saw their quest to repeat as champs come up 1 point short.  Columbia was crowded with Ozarks teams.  The Bakersfield, Couch, and Fair Grove girls made the trip.  As did the Chadwick, Laquey, Miller, and Blue Eye boys.  The Blue & Gold was great.  The Tournament of Champions was incredible.  And we were treated to one of the best all around basketball seasons ever.

A couple of explanations before we continue.  This year I’m naming a team & MVP for each class.  I define MVP as the person who has the biggest impact on their team.  In other words, take that player off the team and what is the effect?  Player of the year is based solely on basketball accomplishments regardless of class.  Who did the best relative to their competition.  And game of the year means a game between two Ozarks teams.  So you won’t see Central beating Rock Bridge listed.  With that, here’s some notable moments from the 08-09 basketball season, our All-OzarksSports teams, and a list of seniors that we say ‘Good bye’ and ‘Thank you’ to.

3/5/09 class 1, 2, & 3 update

All kinds of great games last night.

You want buzzer beaters?  How about Marionville’s Ryan Combs getting the rebound and putback as the horn sounded to lift the Comets over Purdy 64-62.

You’d like to see an upset?  We have a boys and girls game for you.  Take four seed East Newton on the girls side dropping #1 Mt. Vernon 47-37.  Or fourth seeded Thomas Jefferson doing the same on the boys side to top seed Lockwood 55-34 behind Alex Oserowsky’s double double.

Maybe you’d like to see a milestone reached.  Take two instead at Aurora where Garrett Gladden got both career point 1,500 and rebound 1,000 last night as the Tigers advanced 56-43 over Verona.

3/3/09 class 1, 2, & 3 district update

I took the roadshow to Aurora last night for the class 1 district 6 boys first round.  The first game went to #5 seed Walnut Grove 64-52 over Niangua.  I only caught the last quarter, but the Tigers looked very poised and controlled as they moved on to face #1 Chadwick.

The next game featured #2 seed Everton against #7 Exeter.  Everton has been a very solid team the last two seasons with Garrett Gladden and Chase Knackstedt leading them.  Exeter has struggled to find wins for a number of years.  But on this night, thanks to a couple of players who seemed like they couldn’t miss, Exeter played like a team ready to extend their season.  Everton was certainly not at their sharpest and really seemed sluggish at the start but still got out to a 4-0 lead.  Then Zach Wubker of Exeter hit a three from the corner and the battle was joined.  Neither team found the hoop much and quarter one ended with Everton on top 8-7.  Things picked up in the second as Gladden began to find the range and Exeter knocked down 3 more treys to enter halftime up 26-25.  Finally in the third quarter the dam broke.  Two more Exeter threes and Keith Hayworth’s hot shooting had the lead at 35-31 when Everton embarked on a 17-2 run grabbing an 11 point lead as they entered the third quarter.  Gladden began to take charge down low and Knackstedt, who only had 3 points in the first half, would score 17 second half points for the Tigers.  But Exeter would not go quietly as Wubker would find the hoop from long range 4 times in the final quarter finishing with 7 threes for the game.  Hayworth hit 3 of his own as Exeter long range bombing kept them around.  But both Gladden and Knackstedt hit their free throws in the final quarter and another run of 13-3 made the final score 71-55 Everton.  Gladden had 26 points and 12 rebounds and Knackstedt 20 points for Everton.  Wubker scored all of his 21 on 7 threes, and Hayworth added 18 for Exeter.

3/26/09 scores and district results

So much going on tonight.  The Ozark district is living up to all the hype as Nixa’s Caleb Thomas hits a 3 at the buzzer to defeat Ozark 61-60 and advance to the finals.  The shot was the first three of the season for Thomas.  Their opponent will be Branson who closed the door on the coaching career of Roy Green by defeating Kickapoo 80-68.

At Cassville, the Cassville Lady Wildcats gave Republic all they wanted before finally falling 51-46.  The lid was on hoop for Republic from the field but the shoot 17 more free throws than the Lady Wildcats and outscored them 17-8 from the stripe to move to the final.  Hannah Elkins had 21 points for Cassville.

In Owensville, the Salem boys continue their surprising run by knocking off powerful Owensville 69-67.  The sixth seeded Tigers will play for the title against state ranked Helias.

And Rogersville is the first area boys team to book a ticket to the state tournament.  The Wildcats downed fifth seeded West Plains 53 -41 to advance.  They’ll next play Wednesday night at Lebanon agains the winner of the Helias/Salem game.

Class 1, 2, & 3 boys district preview

CLASS 1

District 2 at Bakersfield

Eminence has already beaten Lesterville twice this year and stud Austin Brewer is now back.  After scoring 12 points his first game back, can he get back to near full capacity?

  1. Eminence
  2. Lesterville
  3. Dora
  4. Bakersfield
  5. Bradleyville
  6. Bunker
  7. Lutie

Prediction:  This looks pretty clear cut.  Eminence hasn’t needed Brewer to beat Lesterville yet.  They do even better with him.
