After a softball quarterfinal Saturday across the state, two Ozarks teams remain alive in their quest for a state championship. The Pleasant Hope Lady Pirates defeated Strafford 6-4 as they push three runs home in the top of the sixth, then hold on. For Pleasant Hope, it’s the school’s second final four appearance in any sport. The last appearance being in boys basketball in 1929 when they took fourth.
On the other end of the spectrum, Republic is making 11th trip to a final four. But I’m not sure they’ve ever done it in such dramatic fashion. Down 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh, with the bases loaded, Republic’s Hailey Johnson jacked an 0-2 pitch over the fence for a walk off grand slam to send the Lady Tigers to their second softball final four. Johnson also was the winning pitcher striking out 11 along the way.

It could be a case of deja vu all over again for Ozarks class 2 volleyball in 2009. Last year, three area teams were ranked in the top 10 in the state to start the year. Of those three, none won their district and only one played for the title. Meanwhile Mt. View-Liberty had an extremely quiet 22 win season before falling in the state quarterfinals to runner up Scott City, Clever & Bridget Hanafin made their own run to the quarters before being downed by 3rd place finisher Ash Grove. The Lady Pirates were the only team to win a game from state champion Hermann.
Those three will be heard from again, but a host of other squads will be vying to be that unheralded team that rises up and makes a great run this year. Here’s who to watch. Continue reading 2009 class 2 volleyball preview
