A pretty resounding answer from you, the readers, as to who the girls athlete of the year is. By a better than 2 to 1 margin over the next closest finisher, it Hannah Wilkerson of Miller. For her record setting exploits on the basketball court and the third place finish of her Miller Lady Cardinals, Wilkerson [...]

The first team released on the girls side of the Missouri Challenge Cup just happens to be the Southwest Missouri squad. A great pair of coaches in Nixa’s Jim Middleton and Sparta’s Jerry Songer. They each bring a pair of players having state championship experience with Allison Stevens and Kayla Coffer from Sparta, and Bethanie Funderburk and Emily Walker of Nixa. Kickapoo is well represented by Makenzie Smith and Casey Carroll. Of the remaining five players, four are from class 2 schools (Bridget Hanafin of Clever, Hannah Wilkerson from Miller, Hartville’s Maggie Arnall, and Whitney Mills of Thayer) and one (Bailey Irvine of Hillcrest) is from a class 5.
That’s a great lineup that has a great task ahead of them to equal or better last year’s result.

Since I started my ad selling effort yesterday, today I’m offering something for free. To bring balance to OzarksSports.Net. But it’s at the end of the article so you’ll have to read all the way through.
Among many other things, I am a stat geek. And I’m OK with that. Many sports fans are. If you’re going to be geeky about something, stats rank well ahead of many other less cool things. Like African rulers, mineral water, or Twilight. And part of being a stat geek is that I LOVE records. Not the things that look like overgrown black CDs that we had when I was young (I think I still have a Men At Work record somewhere at my parents house). I’m talking records achieved on the field of athletic competition. The most points, fewest runs, best field goal percentage, highest hitting percentage, lowest yards allowed per game, most consecutive free throws hit, most game ending putouts made in games of less than seven innings that ended with a left handed pitcher on the mound and an umpire with a last name starting with the letter ‘W’ behind the plate.

Another fantastic year of Ozarks hoops. Three state titles courtesy of the Hillcrest boys, and Webb City and Mt. Vernon girls. Tons of teams in the state rankings all year. We saw Hannah Wilkerson run down the all time high school scoring mark, then make a run to Columbia. We witnessed possibly the national high school boys basketball highlight of the year when Trey Starks launched himself into the rafters of Mizzou arena and over Oakville’s Garrett Reeg. We prayed as Stephanie Phillips stopped coaching to renew her fight against cancer. And we rejoiced as she came back to guide her team to the final four. We followed the rise of newcomers to the state rankings. Verona and Richland on the girls side. Thomas Jefferson and Gainesville on the boys. We cheered all the buzzer beaters, big wins, great plays, comebacks, defensive stands, hustle plays, razzle dazzle, and gutsy losses. And now, like always, we say goodbye to those seniors who gave everything they had for their schools, for their towns, and for us, and leave us with so many memories. Here’s the year in review.

A bittersweet day today as we’ll say good bye to some of the greats in Ozarks basketball. Clever’s Jeremy Dresslaer, Mt. Vernon’s Zack Kleine, and Miller’s Hannah Wilkerson will each play their last high school basketball game today. And though we’ll most likely see them again in college, there’s always something special about the high school days. About playing for town and team. And each one of these three has been huge for all four years. Thanks for the memories Jeremy, Zack, and Hannah. Now go make one more.
Here’s our schedule for today.
- Noon – Class 3 girls 3rd place – Macon (26-5) vs Maryville (25-4)
- 1:40 – Class 3 boys 3rd place – Whitfield (21-11) vs Mt. Vernon (24-8)
- 3:20 – Class 2 girls 3rd place – Canton (25-6) vs Miller (27-5)

Six games to cover today as teams try to move into the ultimate high school game, the state championship. We’ll pick up our coverage just before the 1:40 start of the Clever boys taking on undefeated Sturgeon, and the Mt. Vernon girls facing Maryville. We’ll keep going right through the 8:20 finale between Miller and 29-0 Harrisburg. Losers play Friday for third, winners play Saturday for all the marbles. Should be a great day.
1:32 – And it’s just about go time for the Clever boys and Mt. Vernon girls. Lawrence County is in the house with both Mt. Vernon team and the Miller girls. And just missed getting Verona in too. Big year for the LC. In the early games Bernie pulls out a 1 point win over Wellston-Eskridge 69-68, and the defending class 3 girls champs Cardinal Ritter handle Macon 50-42.
2:03 – First quarter scores courtesy of The Scoreboard Guy. The Sturgeon Fightin’ Fishes have jumped all over Clever 19 to 6. And the Mt. Vernon girls hold a 12-9 lead after the first quarter. Both teams are very good defensively.

On a wild Saturday of playoff action, six OS.Net teams punched their tickets to the final four. Including the Dadeville boys who won their anticipated matchup with Thomas Jefferson 63-55 in overtime. Zach Medley lead the Bearcats with 23 points hitting five three pointers including a buzzer beating 70 footer going into halftime. The Thayer girls are going to their first final four as Kaley Hebert’s 20 points lead them past Meadow Heights 51-40.
Unfortunately, the road ended for a few area teams also. The Stockton girls saw their season end 46-30 to Maryville. Verona stayed with undefeated Montrose the majority of the game. But when Tristan Carrasquillo fouled out with 6 minutes to go and Verona trailing by 2, Montrose’s Morgan Eye took over. Eye would finish with 29 points as the Lady Wildcats fall 61-50. The Frisco League saw their two remaining teams fall short of Columbia as the Stoutland boys lost to Wellston-Eskridge 68-55, and the Richland girls couldn’t get past Canton, falling 76-54.

Eight teams left in each division after last night’s state sectional action. And the Ozarks scored some big wins.
On the girls side, the big game was in Republic and I was there. Sparta and Miller went back and forth all night. But a bizarre turn of events early in the fourth quarter is what most people will remember. With the score tied at 43 and coming out of a timeout, one of Sparta’s players waited until Miller was about to inbound the ball at halfcourt before coming on the floor. As she ran onto the court, a bandage that was covering some blood fell off. The rules are very clear that a player that has any exposed blood must be subbed out for and the exposed area covered before they can play. No big deal right? No.
