Another fantastic year of Ozarks hoops. Three state titles courtesy of the Hillcrest boys, and Webb City and Mt. Vernon girls. Tons of teams in the state rankings all year. We saw Hannah Wilkerson run down the all time high school scoring mark, then make a run to Columbia. We witnessed possibly the national high school boys basketball highlight of the year when Trey Starks launched himself into the rafters of Mizzou arena and over Oakville’s Garrett Reeg. We prayed as Stephanie Phillips stopped coaching to renew her fight against cancer. And we rejoiced as she came back to guide her team to the final four. We followed the rise of newcomers to the state rankings. Verona and Richland on the girls side. Thomas Jefferson and Gainesville on the boys. We cheered all the buzzer beaters, big wins, great plays, comebacks, defensive stands, hustle plays, razzle dazzle, and gutsy losses. And now, like always, we say goodbye to those seniors who gave everything they had for their schools, for their towns, and for us, and leave us with so many memories. Here’s the year in review.

Verona continues their run of solid play lately winning their Ozark 7 showdown with Exeter 54-42. Jessica Smith had 21 to lead three Lady Wildcats in double figures. That should set up a showdown with Purdy for the league title on the 26th. Parkview gets a big win 67-65 over Glendale. Emily Akins leads four Lady Vikings in double figures. Megan Deines scored 23 for Glendale. Ava gets a good win 58-56 over Blue Eye. And Everton’s Jessica Holland has the big game of the night going for 31 points as the Lady Tigers defeat Hurley 50-46.
On the boys side Robbe Ewing’s 28 points leads Stockton over Morrisville 73-70. Shawn Artz had 25 for the Panthers. Rogersville drops a close one in overtime falling 70-65 to Hickman. And the game of the night is a border battle with Bakersfield defeating Yellville-Summit of Arkansas 89-87 in double overtime. Dakota Ellison continues his fantastic year scoring 36 points on 5 of 6 shooting from three point range, and 9 of 10 shooting from the free throw line. It’s Kickapoo 2, Glendale 0 in the latest version of the annual basketball rivalry as the Kickapoo boys completed the mid-week sweep of the Falcons last night with a 64-57 win. Brodie Wingert’s double double leads the way as he registers 14 points and 15 boards. Glendale held the lead at the end of the first period 17-13, at the half 25-24, held the lead until midway through the third quarter, and tied it back up at 41 heading into the fourth. It would stay close until a Ryan Rippee gave the Chiefs a 5 point lead with less than 2 minutes left. Glendale would get no closer and the Chiefs take an important game with district seeding implications. Cameron Johnson scored 18 to lead Glendale.
