A fun night as always in Springfield at the 33rd Lions Club All-Star Classic pitting the best of the city vs the best of the area. In the girls game, Kylie Williamson of Lighthouse Christian took over down the stretch scoring 11 of the City’s final 15 points as the City girls grab a rare win in the series 56-51. Both Casey Carroll of Kickapoo and Shelby Stewart of Parkview helped out with 11 points each. Nixa’s Emily Walker was the only Area girl in double figures with 16. Points were much more plentiful in the boys game, but they played a bit longer as the Area boys got two free throws from Zac Hill of Nixa with 1.9 seconds left in the third overtime to win 97-95. Continue reading 2010 Springfield Lions Club All-Star Classic Here they are. The full rosters for both the boys and girls teams in this year’s Missouri Challenge Cup. As well as the seeds. On the girls side, the Southwest team, composed entirely of Ozarks players, is seeded first. The Central team, coached by Skyline’s Kevin Cheek and featuring Jordan Garrison of Osceola is seeded seventh. While the South Central team, with Jessica Parker of Climax Springs and Lanicia Lawrence of Waynesville, is seeded eighth. The defending champs on the boys side, the Southwest squad, is seeded fourth this year with John Schaefer of Hillcrest at the helm. Andre Hilbert of Laquey, our player of the year, is on the seventh seeded South Central team. I’ll have the game schedule posted next week. Quarterfinals are Friday the 28th with semis & championships on the 29th. GIRLS
And here’s the Missouri Challenge Cup team for the defending boys champions. John Schaefer of Hillcrest gets the coaching duties and brings along Taylor Sade. The COC provides 5 players to the team. Preston Guiot of Bolivar, Kevin Stander of Republic, Branson’s Dana Thomas, Zac Hill of Nixa and Ozark’s Thomas Ligon. In addition to Sade, Brandon Helse of Kickapoo and Matt McCreary of Joplin represent the OC. The Big 8 gets will have two players on the squad with Zac Kleine of Mt. Vernon and Toby Roelfsema of Seneca. And Clever’s Jeremy Dresslaer rounds out the squad. Southwest Team Coach: John Schaefer, Hillcrest A bittersweet day today as we’ll say good bye to some of the greats in Ozarks basketball. Clever’s Jeremy Dresslaer, Mt. Vernon’s Zack Kleine, and Miller’s Hannah Wilkerson will each play their last high school basketball game today. And though we’ll most likely see them again in college, there’s always something special about the high school days. About playing for town and team. And each one of these three has been huge for all four years. Thanks for the memories Jeremy, Zack, and Hannah. Now go make one more. Here’s our schedule for today.

Continue reading Day 2 Show Me Showdown II Updates Six games to cover today as teams try to move into the ultimate high school game, the state championship. We’ll pick up our coverage just before the 1:40 start of the Clever boys taking on undefeated Sturgeon, and the Mt. Vernon girls facing Maryville. We’ll keep going right through the 8:20 finale between Miller and 29-0 Harrisburg. Losers play Friday for third, winners play Saturday for all the marbles. Should be a great day. 1:32 – And it’s just about go time for the Clever boys and Mt. Vernon girls. Lawrence County is in the house with both Mt. Vernon team and the Miller girls. And just missed getting Verona in too. Big year for the LC. In the early games Bernie pulls out a 1 point win over Wellston-Eskridge 69-68, and the defending class 3 girls champs Cardinal Ritter handle Macon 50-42. 2:03 – First quarter scores courtesy of The Scoreboard Guy. The Sturgeon Fightin’ Fishes have jumped all over Clever 19 to 6. And the Mt. Vernon girls hold a 12-9 lead after the first quarter. Both teams are very good defensively. On a wild Saturday of playoff action, six OS.Net teams punched their tickets to the final four. Including the Dadeville boys who won their anticipated matchup with Thomas Jefferson 63-55 in overtime. Zach Medley lead the Bearcats with 23 points hitting five three pointers including a buzzer beating 70 footer going into halftime. The Thayer girls are going to their first final four as Kaley Hebert’s 20 points lead them past Meadow Heights 51-40. Unfortunately, the road ended for a few area teams also. The Stockton girls saw their season end 46-30 to Maryville. Verona stayed with undefeated Montrose the majority of the game. But when Tristan Carrasquillo fouled out with 6 minutes to go and Verona trailing by 2, Montrose’s Morgan Eye took over. Eye would finish with 29 points as the Lady Wildcats fall 61-50. The Frisco League saw their two remaining teams fall short of Columbia as the Stoutland boys lost to Wellston-Eskridge 68-55, and the Richland girls couldn’t get past Canton, falling 76-54. Next: 3/5 – Championship – #1 Thomas Jefferson vs #2 Lockwood A huge contest in Verona tonight as the Lady Wildcats were looking to rebound from a loss to Clever against state-ranked Purdy who knocked off Miller last week. And rebound Verona did as they win the Ozark 7 matchup 61-56 behind the 23 points of Tristan Carrasquillo. Jessica Smith added 21 for Verona, while Shelby White led Purdy with 20. On the boys side, Parkview gives a big shot in the arm to their Ozark Conference title hopes knocking off Joplin 51-48. And Houston rides Kyle Poynter’s 36 points to a 84-83 double overtime win over Mountain Grove. Poynter hit a 3 as the 4th quarter buzzer went off to send the game to overtime tied at 66.
