Final Day – State Boys Golf Championships

A couple of brilliant performances by area golfers during today’s final round of the MSHSAA state boys golf championships, but the closest any area team or golfer can get to a state title is third.

In class 1, New Covenant Academy made a charge up the leader board taking third.  Garrett Dollins lead the way with a 73, the best round of the day, to make all-state at sixth.  Joining him was teammate Tyler Spencer who finished in a tie for eleventh.

And in class 3, Jacob Fair of Monett shot a 71 to vault into the top ten finishing in a tie for fifth.  Ava’s Josh Wendler also made all-state finishing in 14th.  Webb City finished ninth overall as a team.

Willow Springs held off strong challenges from a number of teams to take third in class 2.  Mt. Vernon, Springfield Catholic, and Mountain Grove were among the challengers, finishing sixth, seventh, and eighth respectively.  Individually, Eric Wilmoth of Mt. Vernon was the only area golfer to make all-state finishing tied for ninth.

Week 8 review

What a week.  Class 3 #1 Monett goes down hard.  As does #6 Mountain Grove.  A team wins on a safety.  A running back averages almost 34 yards a carry.  Class 4 #1 Webb City and class 1 #5 Thayer make big statements about their intentions.  And 200 yard rushing games abound this week with at least 6 different runners hitting the mark.  Now here’s your piping hot version of…

Week 7 review

I think it’s safe to say we had the upset of the year this weekend.  I had Greenfield/Lockwood on my ‘Games to keep an eye on’ list, but only thought it would be closer than expected.  Lebanon has found the power switch after a slow start to the season.  They’ll need it going into a district that features undefeated Rolla, a Camdenton team that is lethal when on, and a Waynesville squad that has one two of their last three.  Webb City & Cassville look to be in great form to defend their titles, Mountain Grove may have found the springboard they need to get them to the Dome, and our favorite Eagle continues to soar.  All in this weeks hermetically sealed version of…

Week 7 picks

Last week before everyone gets into districts, and it’s going to be sloppy out there for a lot of teams. How will that affect things?  Conventional wisdom says whoever can run the ball will win.  But conventional wisdom also says always double down when you have 11.  But in reality, if you’re playing with the rule that the dealer always stands on 17 (including soft hands, such as an Ace and a six), then double down on a 10 or 11 when the dealer’s up card is less than your total. If you’re playing a dealer who hits on hard 17′s, then also double down your 11 vs. a dealer’s Ace.  The point is, conventional wisdom is mostly, but not always right.  And specific circumstances can turn conventional wisdom into a hockey puck.  In this case, we’re talking about football which can really play havoc with conventional wisdom.

That being said, I confidently predict a fine week of picks.  Which, according to my paragraph up above, means I’ll be reeling in shock at about 9:45 PM.  But by then we should also have a much clearer picture of the title chases in the COC Large, SCA, SRVC, & WEMO.  I don’t know if the pinball machine will still be plugged in from last weeks score fest, but there looks to be a couple of high scorers again tonight.  So sit back & enjoy.  And while you do, read what I think all about it in the ….

Game of the Week

Week 6 picks

A super week of action this week.  Huge matchups with Mountain Grove traveling to Bolivar, Greenfield going to Jasper, and Branson taking on Carthage.  Huge conference games with Salem at Mt. View-Liberty, Neosho at Webb City, Pierce City at Miller, Hillcrest at Lebanon, and Camdenton at Nixa.  And the huge district gets underway with class 5 district 7 action between Ozark and Parkview, and Kickapoo and Glendale.

No jokes this week folks.  Here’s the…

Week 6 Picks

Game of the Week

  • Mountain Grove (4-1) (#8 class 3) at Bolivar (5-0) (#3 class 4)
    • On the surface, this appears to be a matchup of offensive powers.  The Panthers average just over 30 ppg, while Bolivar goes for over 40.  The names are on the offensive side.  Evan Williams and Chris Mathews for Mountain Grove.  Josh Moffett, Alex Talley, and Kolton Peavy for Bolivar.  And it may ultimately be.  If neither defense asserts itself, this could be a shootout.  Bolivar is so balanced run to pass that no defense can key on any one area.  The Panthers have shown they can take charge of the ground and run all day.  But I think it’s more likely that one of the defenses does take control and generates a substantial second half lead for their team.  But who?  Mountain Grove is yielding just over 10 ppg and has two straight shutouts.  But gave up 36 to the best passing team they’ve seen so far, Mt. View-Liberty.  Bolivar’s D is averaging just over 14 ppg and seems to be improving.  But gave up an inexplicable 28 to Republic earlier this year.

OS.Net Question of the Week – 9/28/09

As we hit the halfway mark, this weeks question involves who has had the best season so far.  Lot’s of good candidates across the Ozarks.  Touchdown machine Caleb Schaffitzel covers both offense & defense for Fair Grove.  Christian Privett of #1 Monett.  Braxton Baker, one of many strong links for Webb City.  Maybe you like one [...]

Week 5 review

Just call me butter baby, because I am on a roll.  Only one ugly game this week and it truly was ugly as Rolla & Joplin slugged it out in the slop.  Other than that, I only missed close ones.  So, yes.  I am feeling better about myself.  I am somebody.  Wednesday we’ll debut the rankings for each class along with the undefeated & winless lists.  But rest assured, I’ll be studying hard to do even better this week in the meantime.

Because I’m not happy, until all the ugly is eliminated from…

The Good

  • Nixa (3-1) at Webb City (4-0) (#1 class 4)
    • Prediction: No matter who’s at QB, the Cardinals take it.
    • Result: Webb City 42, Nixa 21.  Braxton Baker & Maddy Johnson rush for 3 TDs each.  Patrick Drake returns to go 11 of 18 passing for 173 yards.

Day 1 state golf results

A mixed bag of results after day 1 at the Missouri state boys golf championships.  In class 1, Greenwood ended the day with a 17 shot lead over second place Rock Port.  Andy Godwin lead the charge by finishing tied for first at the halfway point with a 74 at Twin Oaks.  Thayer sits in fifth place just seven strokes back of second.  Clever’s Damiun Walker and Patrick Conner of Greenwood also finished in the top 10.

Willow Springs had a big first day in class 2 finishing in second place 6 strokes out of first.  Steven Mallow and Cole Johnson both finished in the top 10 for the Bears at Sedalia.  They trail first round leader J. J. Brown of Ash Grove.  David Bailey of Catholic is tied with Johnson in seventh as the Irish are in third only two strokes behind Willow Springs.  Mountain Grove’s Aaron Harker also shares that seventh place tie.
