The first team released on the girls side of the Missouri Challenge Cup just happens to be the Southwest Missouri squad. A great pair of coaches in Nixa’s Jim Middleton and Sparta’s Jerry Songer. They each bring a pair of players having state championship experience with Allison Stevens and Kayla Coffer from Sparta, and Bethanie Funderburk and Emily Walker of Nixa. Kickapoo is well represented by Makenzie Smith and Casey Carroll. Of the remaining five players, four are from class 2 schools (Bridget Hanafin of Clever, Hannah Wilkerson from Miller, Hartville’s Maggie Arnall, and Whitney Mills of Thayer) and one (Bailey Irvine of Hillcrest) is from a class 5.
That’s a great lineup that has a great task ahead of them to equal or better last year’s result.

Eight teams left in each division after last night’s state sectional action. And the Ozarks scored some big wins.
On the girls side, the big game was in Republic and I was there. Sparta and Miller went back and forth all night. But a bizarre turn of events early in the fourth quarter is what most people will remember. With the score tied at 43 and coming out of a timeout, one of Sparta’s players waited until Miller was about to inbound the ball at halfcourt before coming on the floor. As she ran onto the court, a bandage that was covering some blood fell off. The rules are very clear that a player that has any exposed blood must be subbed out for and the exposed area covered before they can play. No big deal right? No.

Verona continues their run of solid play lately winning their Ozark 7 showdown with Exeter 54-42. Jessica Smith had 21 to lead three Lady Wildcats in double figures. That should set up a showdown with Purdy for the league title on the 26th. Parkview gets a big win 67-65 over Glendale. Emily Akins leads four Lady Vikings in double figures. Megan Deines scored 23 for Glendale. Ava gets a good win 58-56 over Blue Eye. And Everton’s Jessica Holland has the big game of the night going for 31 points as the Lady Tigers defeat Hurley 50-46.
On the boys side Robbe Ewing’s 28 points leads Stockton over Morrisville 73-70. Shawn Artz had 25 for the Panthers. Rogersville drops a close one in overtime falling 70-65 to Hickman. And the game of the night is a border battle with Bakersfield defeating Yellville-Summit of Arkansas 89-87 in double overtime. Dakota Ellison continues his fantastic year scoring 36 points on 5 of 6 shooting from three point range, and 9 of 10 shooting from the free throw line. Cole Denton also has a huge game with 23 points and 17 boards for the Lions.

After a banner year for girls basketball in the Ozarks, we’re primed to do it again. Legitimate state contenders are in every class. Division 1 signees and other future college players abound. Great conference races in the Big 8, COC Large, Ozark Conference, Ozark 7, and Summit Conference should keep the courts hot all year. And it all points to another bunch of teams in Columbia come March. Let’s go.
Top 5 Teams By Class
Class 1
- Verona – Senior Beth Bigham plus three talented sophomores make Verona a contender.
- Chadwick
- Humansville
- Bakersfield
- Walnut Grove

Last year was a fantastic year for class 1 volleyball in the Ozarks. The state poll was dominated by teams from SW Mo with up to five teams at a time, and seven teams overall making an appearance in the top 10. Six teams made the state tournament with three advancing to quarterfinals. The only thing that kept it from being a great year was that Eminence finished runner up instead of champion falling 21-25, 25-22, 25-23 to Sacred Heart.
2009 should be another excellent year. A number of all-district, all-region, & all-state players return. And a state title is definitely not out of question. Here’s the teams & players to watch for.

Since we’re halfway through baseball season, I thought I’d better do our basketball review before it gets totally lost. We’ll always remember this as the year of the ladies in the Ozarks as every state championship game features a team from SW Mo. The Nixa Lady Eagles, Exeter Lady Tigers, and Sparta Lady Trojans each bring home state titles with Sparta running the table at a perfect 31-0. Joining those three in the Show-Me Showdown finals were the Webb City Lady Cardinals & Skyline Lady Tigers who saw their quest to repeat as champs come up 1 point short. Columbia was crowded with Ozarks teams. The Bakersfield, Couch, and Fair Grove girls made the trip. As did the Chadwick, Laquey, Miller, and Blue Eye boys. The Blue & Gold was great. The Tournament of Champions was incredible. And we were treated to one of the best all around basketball seasons ever.
A couple of explanations before we continue. This year I’m naming a team & MVP for each class. I define MVP as the person who has the biggest impact on their team. In other words, take that player off the team and what is the effect? Player of the year is based solely on basketball accomplishments regardless of class. Who did the best relative to their competition. And game of the year means a game between two Ozarks teams. So you won’t see Central beating Rock Bridge listed. With that, here’s some notable moments from the 08-09 basketball season, our All-OzarksSports teams, and a list of seniors that we say ‘Good bye’ and ‘Thank you’ to.

The Missouri Basketball Coaches Association released their All-State teams yesterday. 26 girls and 15 boys from the Ozarks were selected. The Sparta girls garnered the most selections with three, Kayla Coffer, Brooke Stevens, and Tashina Tennis. The girls teams from Webb City, Nixa, and Exeter had two selections each. And Nixa’s Jim Middleton, Skyline’s Kevin Cheek, Jerry Songer of Sparta, and Jason Cole of Exeter were each named the Richard Fairchild coach of the year in their respective classes. Kelsey Williams of Eminence was the only Ozarks freshman named on either the boys or girls side. Eight juniors and four sophomores on the girls side. Three juniors and one sophomore for the boys, so a lot of talent will be returning next year. Congratulations to all area honorees.

3:55 PM – Sparta brings it home. Sparta 56, Canton 49. The scoring was cranked up in the second half as Canton’s Tori Niemann, who set out most of the first half with two fouls, scored 18 points to finish with 21. But Sparta was equal to task as they built their lead to as much as 15 in the third period. Brooke Stevens goes for 19, Kayla Coffer 16, and Tashina Tennis 11 as the Lady Trojans complete the perfect season and win their first state championship! Sparta leaves no question about who is #1 in class three as they down the #3, #4, & #6 teams from the final poll on their way to the title.
The Ozarks now sit 2-1 in girls state title games this year. Fair Grove and Skyline will play for their shot this evening. And Exeter will play for the title tomorrow. Congratulations Sparta Lady Trojans! Undefeated state champions!
2:50 PM – Halftime and Sparta holds the lead over Canton 21-16. The low scoring favors Canton, but Sparta has to like where they stand as they start the second half. Brooke Stevens and Kayla Coffer each have 9 points.
1:50 PM – We’ll be tipping off shortly, and Sparta will be hoping to bring home the second girls state championship of the year for the Ozarks. For 2009, we’ve had a girls team from the Ozarks in every title game. A Fair Grove win later today gets an area rep in all five classes. So far it’s been a rough weekend for area teams as only Exeter has beaten a team from outside SW Mo. Sparta with everything on the line starting shortly.

2:15 PM – Sparta doesn’t let it stay close, comes out firing in the third period hitting 5 3s to push the lead to as much as 19, then maintained the rest of the way to win 59-38 over Couch. Kayla Coffer gets 21 and Brooke Stevens 17 for the Lady Trojans. Sparta shot 63.2% from the field in the second half including 5 of 10 threes. They also held a 27-18 rebounding advantage but it was the hot shooting that turned the tide. Just an explosion as they hit 3 bombs and had an 11-0 run coming out of the locker room. Couch didn’t get their first second half bucket until under 4 minutes left in the third and they couldn’t recover. Whitney Mills lead Couch with 12 points and they head to the 3rd place game at 10:40 AM tomorrow. Sparta will be waiting for the winner of Canton/New Franklin in the 2 PM championship.
1:25 PM – Halftime of a slugfest in Columbia. Sparta leads by a field goal 16-13 over Couch. If I’m Sparta coach Jerry Songer, I’m not liking that score. Couch is reluctant to press, but when they do it is impressive to behold. If it stays close into the fourth, look for Couch to make a run.
